Myth 1: Acne Stems from Poor Hygiene

Acne develops when hair follicles get blocked by oil and dead skin cells, not from dirt or surface oils. Over-washing or harsh scrubbing can irritate the skin further and aggravate breakouts.

In adults, hormonal changes and internal factors play a bigger role than cleanliness.

Myth 2: Higher Price Means Better Results

Cost does not guarantee effectiveness. The key lies in selecting products with active ingredients suited to individual concerns, supported by scientific evidence rather than promotional hype.

For acne, proven options include benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. For signs of aging, retinoids and vitamin C show strong research support. Effective ingredients appear in products at various price levels, making smart choices more important than spending heavily.

Myth 3: Oily Skin Should Skip Moisturizer

Skipping moisturizer is a frequent error for those with oily skin. Removing natural moisture prompts the skin to produce excess oil as compensation, potentially worsening oiliness.

Everyone benefits from hydration. Lightweight, oil-free, or gel-based formulas work well for oily types. The aim is balance, not elimination of oil, as proper moisture supports healthier skin function.

Myth 4: Eczema Can Spread to Others

UV radiation persists through clouds, with a substantial portion still reaching the skin on overcast days. UVA rays, which contribute to premature aging and long-term damage, penetrate windows indoors.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF application forms a vital part of any morning routine, regardless of weather, season, or indoor time.

Myth 7: Pores Can Be Permanently Shrunk

Pore size is mostly determined by genetics, so no product can permanently reduce it. Certain formulations make pores appear smaller temporarily.

Clogged pores from oil and dead cells stretch and look larger. Keeping them clear with ingredients like salicylic acid helps, while niacinamide boosts elasticity for a tighter look.

Myth 8: Daily Exfoliation Benefits All Skin Types

Frequent exfoliation removes natural oils and weakens the skin barrier, leading to sensitivity, inflammation, or worsened acne.

Limit exfoliation to a few times weekly, depending on the method—physical scrubs or chemical agents like AHAs and BHAs. Signs of overdoing it include tightness, flaking, or soreness, indicating the need for recovery.

Skincare remains highly personal—what suits one skin type may trigger problems in another. Relying on research-backed ingredients and consulting a board-certified dermatologist offers the safest path to effective, lasting improvements without unnecessary damage.
