On the JJ Barnes Blog, as the temperature plummets and we are facing morning walks in the cold, I’m sharing top tips for how to stay warm AND look stylish on the Winter school run.
Let’s be honest: the winter school run is basically a daily fashion dilemma. It’s 8am, it’s freezing, the kids are arguing about gloves, and you still want to look like a human who has her life together when you bump into the other parents. Good news – you don’t have to choose between warmth and style.
1. The Hero Coat – Your One Big Investment
You only need ONE great coat that does everything.
Long wool wrap coat (belted)
Why it works: Hits mid-calf or lower so your legs stay warm even when you’re standing still at the gate. The belt cinches your waist (goodbye bulky silhouette) and wool is naturally wind-resistant and insulating. Colours that work forever: camel, charcoal, or black.
Tailored long puffer

Why it works: Modern puffers are matte, slightly shiny, or have a subtle sheen – no more sleeping-bag vibes. Look for one with a belt or an A-line shape. Extra points if it has a hood you can hide on rainy days.
Teddy/borg coat
Why it works: Basically a hug you can wear. Looks expensive in neutral tones (camel, cream, oat). Pair with pleather leggings or tailored trousers to avoid looking too “cuddly”.
Quilted barn jacket (for layering)
Why it works: Wear it under your long wool coat on the really bitter days. Adds zero bulk because it’s slim. Also perfect on its own in early winter or when you’re dashing from car to classroom.
2. Knitwear That Feels Like a Duvet but Looks Chic
Oversized cream roll-neck
Why: Nothing elongates the neck and hides a multitude of tired sins like a big polo neck. Cream brightens your face in grey weather. Tuck the front loosely into jeans for shape.
Cashmere or merino hoodie
Why: The fashion insider’s secret. Wear a cashmere hoodie under a blazer + puffer and you look like you’re in Paris, not outside Year 3.
3. Bottom Half – Legs That Stay Warm Without Looking “Mumsy”
Leather or vegan-leather leggings
Why: Windproof, water-resistant, and instantly cool. Line them with fleece-lined tights or Heattech leggings underneath on arctic days – no one can tell. Spanx faux-leather leggings are a cult favourite for a reason.
Wide-leg wool or wool-blend trousers
Why: Surprisingly warm because of the air trapped in the wide leg. High-waisted styles hold everything in after breakfast chaos.
Dark skinny or straight jeans
Why: Tuck into boots for extra warmth. Go for a high-rise pair with a bit of stretch, then layer long thermal socks over the top (hidden by boots). Raw hem or slight crop stops them looking dated.
4. Accessories – Where the Magic Happens
The giant scarf-blanket
Size matters. Look for 200cm+ length so you can loop it twice and still drape.
Touchscreen leather gloves
Because you will want to keep your gloves on while using your phone and paying for the PTA cake sale.
Hats that aren’t basic beanies
Baker boy caps (leather or wool), fluffy trapper hats, or a felt fedora instantly elevate everything. Bonus: they hide second-day hair.
Statement sunglasses
Even when it’s cloudy. Oversized black frames hide the fact you only managed tinted moisturiser.
5. Footwear That Survives Puddles, Ice, and Still Looks Cool
Knee-high flat boots
Choose flat boots in soft leather or suede with a lug sole.
Chunky ankle boots
Blundstone, Ganni, Veja Venturi, or the & Other Stories quilted pair everyone has this year.
High top trainers
High tops with thick socks are still acceptable at the school gate.
Layer like your life depends on it (because your toes do), add one bold accessory, and walk out knowing you look like the mum who has a silent disco in her kitchen at 6 am and still manages to be early. You’ve got this.
