Back in the early noughties, geek chic had its first outing. It was a major trend, too, taken up by fashion houses such as Gucci under Alessandro Michele. Yet, like all trends, geek chic was gradually edged out by other fashions, slowly fading into the background of the fashion scene. However, the good news is that if you loved this nerdy look, you will be delighted to discover that in 2025 its back. Yes that’s right, fashion houses are once again using geek references to create some of their most successful catwalk shows. How To Style Geek Chic

Nerd glasses still rule, OK! 

First of all, if you are wondering whether chunky framed glasses are still an essential part of the geek chic look, you’ll be pleased to note that they are! Seen on runways, red carpets, and numerous influencer chunky dark frames glasses are the essence of geek chic. 

The good news is that while there are many different traditional wayfarer styles still on offer, you can also explore collections like these Oakley prescription glasses for a more 2025 spin on things. In particular, their clear chunky frames are a great choice as they work with just about any outfit, geek chic or not! 

No more suspenders 

You’ll have noticed that back in the 00s, suspenders or braces, as they are also sometimes called, were a huge part of the geek chic look. However, 2025’s version of geek chic is one that is a little more slick and sophisticated. This means that suspenders are out and have been replaced by high-quality, skinny belts with metal buckles. With extra points if you can wear your belt over a close-cut knit for added shape and structure. 

Ankle socks are a must-have 

While suspenders are a no-no, an item that is featured in nearly every geek chic outfit in 2025 is ankle socks. Short and frilly,  or longer and slouchy, the ankle sock is most definitely having a moment right now, and worn well, it can perfectly set off your outfit, making it look just a little awkward while staying cool at the same time. 

Skip the graphic tee

Back in the 00s, graphic tees often with a humorous phrase or nerdy reference were the focal point of many geek chick outfits. Yet, in 2025, the more sophisticated approach means we will see less of these and more well-tailored basics like Oxford button-down shirts in crisp whites and blues. 

Chunky shoes complete any outfit 

Can you even rock the geek chic look in 2025 if you don’t have chunky loafers on? We don’t think so, and the flatter and higher the soul, the better. In fact, extreme flat forms and creepers are perfect for this look, and while loafers are a must, you can find a range of shoes that have these types of soles, including the iconic Dr Martens Sinclairs and Jaydons, which can add a fun, almost punk rock style edge to any geek style get-up. 

Then there is the other chunky sole shoe option, open-toed platform sandals. You have to be pretty specific with these to get the right look, though. Any thin heels are out, and the platforms need to be plenty chunky. Think the 1970s for reference, and you can’t go wrong. In particular, these types of sandals made from materials with an interesting colour or texture can work perfectly including velvet in deep jewel colours, suades in browns and organes, or glam rock metalics includijng gold and silver. Team with the aforementioned ankle socks, or with lame tights for a glamorous, even version of geek chic. 

Just say no to skinny jeans 

A true staple of the early 00’s geek chic, skinny jeans and skinny trousers generally are nowhere to be found in 2025. Instead, beautifully cut slim fits are the skinniest you will get. Although they are certainly not the only option for tailored bottom wear. Indeed, shorts either long in the bermuda style or cropped hit pants in heavy tweeds are ideal for this look especially when teamed with layered knits or a suit jacket. 

Suits for the win 

While we are on the subject of suits, it’s worth noting that these are the backbone of the 2025 geek chic look. However, you must play with size and scale to be on trend here. What that means is teaming a regular suit jacket with a pleated mini skirt, or a an oversized safari jacket with long shorts will give you a much more successful 2025 geek chic look. 

Midi skirts, but with pleats 

Another type of tailoring that can work very well with this look is the pleated skirt. Of course, they come in all sorts of lengths, including mini, but can be particularly successful in a midi length. This is because it’s not only smart and nerdy, but also gives off that academic and preppy vibe that feeds into geek chic. Where possible, opt for midi length as this offers the clearest reference, and choose dark colours like navy, black and grey that would be just as home as part of a uniform as they would on the runway. 

Hair styles should be slick 

While not a clothing item, the way you wear your hair will impact whether your updated geek chic look will be successful. Think slicker and neater than the 00s, and you’ll be on the right track. Choose minimal leather bags 

Accessorising is always an important part of successfully pulling off any outfit, and so it is for the updated 2025 geek chic look. Instead of canvas backpacks and messenger bags, go for high-end leather goods with a minimal profile. Designer handbags are also a perfect addition to an updated geek chick outfit, especially if they come in plated or quilted leather.
