Best Ways To Protect Children Online

On the JJ Barnes Blog, as the online world becomes more and more present in society, I check out the best ways to protect children online when they’re playing games or interacting with friends.

Internet Access For Kids

The digital landscape is ever-evolving, and with it, the way our children interact and explore the world. Games, social media, and online learning platforms have become an undeniable part of their lives and as much as I try to limit their access, I do feel like I’m fighting against a tidal wave.

Right now, I limit their online activity a lot. They’re not allowed any social media, I have the online community action disabled on their video games, and I don’t post their faces in online presence. However, I know that the older they get, the harder those restrictions will be to impose. More and more education is online, socialising online is a huge part of the youth experience now, and at some point, I have to let them go and exist in the world as adults.

As parents and caregivers, it’s our responsibility to navigate this digital frontier alongside our children, ensuring their online safety, so instead of pretending it isn’t happening, I want to go in with my eyes open and make sure healthy and safe habits are established early on.

In this blog post, I’ll delve into the best ways to protect children online. I’ll explore practical strategies you can implement, from fostering open communication to utilizing parental controls, to equip our children with the tools they need to be responsible and safe digital citizens.

To help me out, Marin Cristian-Ovidiu, the CEO and inventor of OnlineGames.io, sent over a list of top tips for how to keep your child safe from online abuse that I will explore.

Best Ways To Protect Children Online

Hide Your Child’s Personal Details

Your child should create a nickname and use an avatar that has no connection to them, rather than displaying their real name and photo. They should never have any of their basic details (date of birth, school/college name, mobile number, and address) attached to their account, and they should never discuss them online.

  • Protecting from Predators: Unfortunately, the anonymity of the internet can attract malicious individuals. Sharing personal details like real names, addresses, or phone numbers can make children vulnerable to online predators who may try to contact them or gather information for harmful purposes.
  • Preventing Identity Theft: Personal details like birthdays, home addresses, or even pet names can be used by identity thieves to create fake accounts or steal information. Teaching children to be cautious about what they share helps safeguard their identities.
  • Combating Cyberbullying: Sharing personal details online can inadvertently provide ammunition for cyberbullies. By limiting the information readily available, children are less exposed to the risk of targeted online harassment.
  • Developing Healthy Online Habits: Instilling a sense of online privacy early on fosters responsible digital citizenship. Children learn to be discerning about the information they share and develop healthy online habits that protect them not just now, but throughout their digital lives.

Show Them How To Spot Unsafe Adults

Warn your child that adults can masquerade as children to obtain sexual pictures or arrange secret meet-ups. Try to have as open and honest communication with your children as possible so the moment anybody looks like they might be approaching that boundary, they feel safe to come to you for support.

Teaching your children “red flags” to watch out for empowers them to navigate online interactions safely. The goal isn’t to instill fear in your child, but to empower them to identify potentially risky situations.

  • Beware of Excessive Friendliness: Adults who shower children with compliments or gifts online are likely trying to gain their trust.
  • Adults asking for personal information: Explain that it’s never okay to share personal details like home addresses, phone numbers, or school names with strangers online.
  • Recognize Emotional Manipulation: Adults who try to make children feel bad about themselves or threaten them to keep secrets are potential threats.
  • Understand the Lure of “Exclusivity”: Adults who offer special favors or claim a “secret friendship” online are trying to isolate the child from trusted adults.
  • Uncomfortable conversations: Discuss the importance of respecting boundaries online. If someone asks questions or makes comments that make them feel uncomfortable, they should stop talking to them and tell you.

Cybercriminals often use in-game chats to perform their scams (e.g. offering fake loot boxes and downloads). Some try to get kids to give up their ‘skins’ (in-game cosmetic items) or in-app purchases by offering money. In some games, you can turn off the chat function to avoid these messages, but if you can’t, you should make sure your child is aware of the warning signs of a scam.

  • Start Early: Don’t wait until there’s a problem. Begin conversations about online safety early, incorporating them into your regular discussions.
  • Create a Safe Space: Let your child know they can always come to you with any concerns or questions they have about their online interactions.
  • Focus on Feelings: Teach your child to be aware of their gut feelings. Explain that if something feels wrong or uncomfortable online, it probably is.

Also warn your child about behaviours known as trolling and griefing, where people deliberately play badly or do things that make games worse for their teams. Let them know that these people are out to provoke a reaction and the best thing they can do is ignore them.’

-Marin Cristian-Ovidiu

Create A Family Agreement

Discuss safety issues openly with your child, and encourage them to make an agreement with you about things they will and won’t do. This should cover points like how much screen time they’re allowed and an agreement to only play age-appropriate games. Encourage your child to tell you if there are issues, but monitor their games and conversations.

  • Gather the Family: Involve everyone in the discussion. This fosters a sense of ownership and accountability for the established rules.
  • Tailor it to Age: Consider your children’s age and maturity level. Younger children may need more specific guidelines, while teenagers may benefit from discussing broader topics like cyberbullying and online privacy.
  • Clear Expectations: It outlines agreed-upon boundaries for internet usage, including screen time, website restrictions, and responsible social media behavior.
  • Open Communication: The process of creating the agreement fosters open conversations about online safety concerns and potential risks.
  • Shared Responsibility: It establishes a collaborative approach to online safety. Parents set guidelines, while children understand the consequences of their online actions.

Block Them From Accessing Inappropriate Content

Inappropriate online content can range from violence and pornography to gambling, and hate speech. Exposure to such content can be harmful to a child’s development and emotional well-being.

Creating a safe online environment for your children is an ongoing process. Technology evolves, and so should your approach. Stay updated on the latest online trends and threats, and adapt your strategies accordingly. By combining parental controls with open communication and media literacy education, you can build a sturdy digital fence that protects your children while allowing them to explore the wonders of the internet safely.

  • Parental Controls: Most devices and internet service providers offer parental control features. These tools allow you to:
    • Filter Content: Block access to websites with inappropriate content.
    • Restrict Applications: Limit or block access to certain apps that may not be suitable for children.
    • Monitor Activity: Gain insights into your child’s online activity, helping you identify potential risks.
  • Search Engine Filters: Activate SafeSearch settings in search engines like Google and Bing to filter out inappropriate results.
  • Security Software: Consider using security software with parental control features for an additional layer of protection.
  • Whitelisting: Explore “whitelisting” options if available on your device. This allows access only to pre-approved websites, ensuring your child can only visit safe sites.

You can adjust each game’s privacy settings so you have more control over your child’s access. You can also update console settings to set age restrictions, manage online interactions, filter content, and control online purchases. This will prevent your child from being able to download games that feature adult content.

Have A Gameplan For Dealing With Nasty Players

The world of online gaming can be a fantastic space for connection and fun. However, just like any playground, it can attract bullies who try to spoil the experience for others.

  • Gaming Bullies: Online anonymity can embolden players to engage in hurtful behavior like name-calling, threats, and exclusion. This can negatively impact your child’s self-esteem and enjoyment of the game.
  • Cyberbullying: If the bullying is persistent and severe, it can be classified as cyberbullying, a serious issue with potential emotional consequences.

Run your child through the steps of what they should do if someone becomes abusive or behaves suspiciously.

First, immediately block them. Secondly, game developers usually allow you to report these people by providing screenshots or chat logs, so make sure both you and your child know how you can report suspicious or abusive individuals. This will usually result in them getting banned from the game, meaning your child can continue playing in peace.

  • Open Communication: Create a safe space for your child to talk about their online experiences. Encourage them to come to you if they encounter bullying behavior.
  • Developing a Thick Skin: Explain that not everyone online will be nice, and some may try to get a reaction. Help them understand the difference between harmless teasing and true bullying.
  • Focus on the Fun: Remind them that the goal is to have fun while playing. Encourage them to find games with positive communities or play with friends who promote good sportsmanship.
  • Don’t Engage: The best response to most bullies is silence. Engaging with them can give them the satisfaction they seek and escalate the situation.
  • Mute and Report: Most games offer options to mute annoying players or report them to the game moderators. Encourage your child to utilize these features.
  • Take a Break: Sometimes, stepping away from the situation is the best solution. Encourage your child to take a break or switch to another game if needed.

Prevent Them From Maxing Out Your Card

Many games are now designed around in-game purchases, which usually charge huge amounts for cosmetic items or new characters. Charges from these purchases can stack up fast – in fact, most of these games are designed to tempt you into racking up a huge bill.

  • In-App Purchases: Many free games and apps offer in-app purchases that unlock new features, items, or levels. These can be tempting for children and lead to unexpected charges.
  • Subscriptions: Freemium models with hidden subscription fees can quickly become a recurring expense.
  • Digital Content: Virtual goods like clothing for avatars or special game features can be surprisingly costly.

The ease of online shopping can be tempting for kids, but unexpected charges can surprise parents. Here are some steps you can take to prevent unauthorized online spending:

  • Password Protection: Enforce password or fingerprint verification on all devices for purchases. This adds an extra step that discourages impulsive buys.
  • App Store Security: Utilize parental controls within app stores like Google Play or Apple App Store. These allow you to require passwords for all purchases, preventing accidental spending.
  • Disable Autofill: Web browsers often remember payment information for convenience. Turn off autofill features to prevent saved credit card details from being used for surprise purchases.
  • Separate Accounts: Consider prepaid debit cards with limited funds for your child’s online transactions. This teaches budgeting and avoids exceeding spending limits.
  • Virtual Cards: Services like Privacy.com offer virtual cards with specific spending limits. These can be created for individual purchases, providing extra control.
  • Open Communication: Talk openly with your child about online spending. Explain the value of money and responsible purchasing habits.

Make sure none of your cards or your bank account are attached to whatever device your child plays on so there’s no chance of them using your money to buy pixels!

Why Are Fewer People Wearing Bike Helmets?

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I look at evidence that fewer people are wearing bike helmets, and explore why they’re important to hopefully inspire our children to stay safe on the roads!

Bike Helmets

Remember the days when a scraped knee and a wobbly ride were the biggest dangers of learning to ride a bike? I spent many childhood hours whizzing around on my bike, visiting friends and going to playgrounds, and while the thrill of two wheels remains timeless, the landscape of cycling safety has shifted. Recent studies show a concerning decline in helmet use among cyclists, particularly adults. This raises a crucial question: Why are fewer people wearing bike helmets?

As parents and guardians, the safety of our children is paramount. Helmets play a vital role in protecting young heads during those inevitable tumbles and wobbly starts. But beyond the personal responsibility we have towards our own safety and that of our loved ones, understanding the reasons behind the decline in helmet use can help us advocate for a safer cycling environment for everyone.

In this blog post, I’ll delve into the statistics surrounding helmet use, explore the arguments for and against mandatory helmet laws, and most importantly, emphasize the importance of setting a good example for our children when it comes to safe cycling practices. So, buckle up (or put on your helmet!), as we explore the reasons behind the decline in helmet use and reignite the conversation about cycling safety, especially for our future generation.

The Importance Of Bike Helmets

Cycle helmets are getting less love online these days, with search interest in bike helmets decreasing by almost half (44%) compared to last year, despite research showing the risks of going without. Adam Cross, Customer Care Manager at bicycle retailer Paul’s Cycles sent over insights on the importance of helmets in cycling safety, and offers advice on how to check if your helmet is safe.

  • According to Google Trends, search interest in the topic ‘bike helmet’ has decreased by almost half (44%) compared to January last year.
  • As many as 97% of cyclist fatalities are cyclists who weren’t wearing a helmet when a crash happened, US data reveals.
  • Wearing cycle helmets lowers the risk of severe brain injury, ICU requirement, neurosurgical intervention, and mortality, according to a study in the British Medical Journal.

In the UK, there’s no law forcing you to wear a helmet while cycling, but choosing not to could have more than just safety implications. It might also affect your pocket, especially if you’re involved in an accident and hoping for compensation.

While it’s important to remember that cycle helmets don’t prevent collisions from happening, they play a crucial role in protecting cyclists from serious injuries. Helmets act as a safeguard by absorbing impact and reducing the risk of severe head trauma.

Wearing a helmet is not a legal requirement in the UK. Some argue that making it mandatory would discourage people from cycling and that there are other more effective ways to improve cycling safety, such as improving infrastructure. However, when it comes to individual safety decisions about cycling, research studies like the one published in the British Medical Journal highlight the importance of helmets in ensuring one’s safety while cycling.

Stylish Bike Helmets

The resistance against helmet usage frequently comes down to comfort and style concerns. However, finding the perfect helmet is simply a matter of knowing what to look for. From the type of activity to the right size, selecting the ideal helmet is a tailored experience.

Choosing a helmet doesn’t mean compromising on style for safety. Today’s market offers an array of options that combine both, proving that protective gear can also be a fashion statement.

The decline in search interest regarding bike helmets could suggest that some people are unaware of or unconvinced by the safety benefits of wearing one.

-Adam Cross

Cool Helmets for Little Riders

For our tiny trendsetters, safety doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style! Here are some options to keep your little cyclist protected and looking sharp:

Character Helmets: Let their favorite cartoon pals join the ride! Helmets featuring superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs or beloved animals can make wearing a helmet a fun and exciting experience.

Multi-Colored Marvels: Bright and colorful helmets not only look cool, but also increase a child’s visibility on the road.

Light Up the Night: Helmets with built-in LED lights or reflective decals offer an extra layer of safety for evening rides.

Helmets for the Fashion-Forward Adult Cyclist

Adults can also enjoy a variety of stylish options:

The Classic Commuter: Sleek, minimalist helmets in neutral tones like black, white, or gray complement any outfit.

The Bold and Beautiful: Embrace vibrant colors or playful patterns to express your personality while riding.

Visor Versatility: Visored helmets offer protection from the sun and glare, perfect for sunny commutes or leisurely rides.

Retro Revival: Channel vintage vibes with a classic bucket-style helmet, perfect for cruising on a cruiser bike.

Remember, regardless of style, a good helmet should:

  • Fit snugly and comfortably. There should be no more than two finger-widths of space between the helmet and your forehead.
  • Sit level on your head. The front of the helmet should rest just above your eyebrows.
  • Securely fasten with an adjustable chin strap. The strap should be snug but not uncomfortable.

Safety First, Style Always:

While looking good on your bike ride is a bonus, the most important feature of any helmet is its ability to protect your head in case of a fall. Look for helmets that meet safety standards like CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) in the US or CE (Conformité Européenne) in Europe.

How To Check If Your Bike Helmet Is Safe

  • Look for a safety standards sticker inside the helmet, such as those set by the European Committee for Standardization (EN) or equivalent.
  • Another sticker to look out for is the small yellow dot that identifies MIPS technology. This Multi-directional Impact Protection System reduces rotational forces during a crash.
  • The replacement frequency of a helmet depends on its usage, materials, and overall construction.
  • Some materials, like polystyrene, can degrade over time, so it is essential to know the components of your cycle helmet.
  • It is generally recommended to replace your helmet every 3-5 years, even if you haven’t been in an accident.
  • If your helmet has been in a crash or damaged in any way, it is crucial to replace it as it may not provide optimal protection.

Cross also provides advice on different types of cycling helmets, including road bikes, commuter bike helmets, and dirt bike helmets. Check out their full report for more information.

Conclusion

While the reasons behind the decline in helmet use are complex, the importance of head protection remains undeniable. Statistics may show a decrease in reported cycling injuries, but the potential consequences of a head injury are severe, and a responsible approach to safety is crucial.

As parents and guardians, we have a powerful role to play. Modeling safe cycling habits, including consistent helmet use, goes a long way in shaping our children’s attitudes towards safety. By choosing brightly colored or patterned helmets for them, we can make safety a fun and engaging experience.

Looking beyond our own families, advocating for safer cycling infrastructure, dedicated bike lanes, and increased awareness among motorists are all steps towards creating a cycling environment where everyone feels comfortable and protected.

Remember, cycling is a joy to be shared. Let’s keep the roads safe for all riders, young and old, by making informed choices, prioritizing safety, and ensuring every ride is a memorable one for the right reasons. So, buckle up (with a properly fitted helmet, of course!), and let’s keep the wheels rolling – safely!

Top Tips To Make Flowers Last Longer

On the JJ Barnes Blog, ready for Mother’s Day, I check out top tips from a gardening expert for how to make flowers last longer.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Mother’s Day Flowers

Ah, Mother’s Day! A time to celebrate the women who raised us with love and support, and a beautiful bunch of fresh flowers is a traditional way to do just that. But let’s face it, those vibrant blooms rarely last the whole week, especially when they’re left in my charge. This year, I’m determined to keep any flowers I’m gifted looking fresh and fabulous for as long as possible.

So, I decided to tap into the wisdom of a gardening expert. After all, who knows more about keeping plants happy than someone with a green thumb? In this blog post, I’m sharing the top tips I learned to make Mom’s Mother’s Day bouquet last longer. Get ready to discover simple yet effective tricks to ensure those blooms stay bright and beautiful, allowing you and the wonderful mothers you love to enjoy their cheerful presence throughout the week.

According to Julian de Bosdari, CEO of UK plant nursery Ashridge, it all comes down to preventing conditions that allow bacteria to flourish, so he sent over his top tips for how to prolong the lifespan of your flowers and keep them looking healthy for as long as possible.

Flowers are one of the most beloved Mother’s Day gifts, and it’s disappointing that they don’t last longer than they do. However, putting in the effort to take special care of cut flowers will both allow shoppers to get the best value for money and recipients to enjoy their gift for as long as they possibly can.

Keeping your bouquet clean, hydrated, nourished and out of the sun will go a long way in maintaining it, and eliminating nasty bacteria from its environment can help prevent the flowers deteriorating prematurely.

Remember, you can always press or dry your flowers once they’ve reached the end of their lifespan to preserve their beauty and hold onto the significance behind them.

If you are put off by the fleeting nature of cut flowers, a houseplant or garden flowers can be an equally beautiful alternative that your loved one will be able to enjoy for many years.

-Julian de Bosdari, CEO of Ashridge

Top Tips To Make Flowers Last Longer

Choose a long-lasting variety

For those buying a cut bouquet this Mother’s Day, one of the easiest ways to ensure the longevity of your flowers is to opt for a naturally long-lasting variety.

Chrysanthemums: These cheerful blooms come in a dazzling array of colors and offer incredible vase life, lasting up to three weeks with proper care. Their sturdy stems and tightly packed petals make them resistant to drooping.

Lilies: Elegant and fragrant, lilies are a classic Mother’s Day choice. Oriental lilies, in particular, are renowned for their long-lasting blooms, sometimes lasting up to two weeks. Just remember to remove the pollen-laden stamens to prevent staining the petals.

Alstroemeria: Often called “Peruvian lilies,” these vibrant flowers boast a unique trumpet-shaped form and come in a delightful range of colors. They’re known for their extended vase life, lasting up to two weeks, and their strong stems make them stand tall and proud in an arrangement.

Carnations: Don’t underestimate the humble carnation! These affordable flowers are surprisingly long-lasting, with proper care keeping them fresh for up to two weeks. They symbolize love and admiration, making them a perfect choice for Mom.

Gerbera Daisies: These cheerful blooms bring sunshine into any room. While they might not last quite as long as some other options, gerberas can still hold their own in a vase for up to a week with proper care.

On the other hand, more delicate varieties, such as tulips and peonies, have a vase life of around five days, and are likely to wilt much more quickly.

Always start with a clean vase

The very first thing you should do with your bouquet is make sure you have a clean vase to place them in. Vases with narrow openings are typically harder to clean and are prone to trapping bacteria, which can contaminate the water and cause flowers to age and decompose quicker, so aim to use a vase with a wide opening if possible.

Try to avoid using a plastic vase, as the porous material is more likely to harbour bacteria. Glass vases and ceramic vases make for better options, as they are not only easier to clean, but will also elevate the look of your bouquet.

Trim flower stems at an angle

Cut flower bouquets have their stems pre-cut but they are likely to have closed up by the time you purchase them.  Therefore, it’s important to trim half an inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle using a clean knife or pair of sharp flower shears, before setting your flowers in a vase.

Cutting the stems diagonally maximises the surface area for water absorption, allowing your flowers to stay more hydrated. Make sure to trim the stems of your flowers every couple of days to allow flowers the best chance of absorbing water.

Remove foliage below the water line

Any leaves or petals submerged in vase water should be removed as they can promote bacterial growth. Bacteria can clog the stems, which obstructs water absorption and shortens the lifespan of your flowers.

You can keep any healthy foliage that is above the water line, to preserve your bouquet and make it look as full as possible.

Keep flowers out of sunlight and away from fruit

Flowers should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources as these can cause wilting. Direct sun and heat also prompt buds to bloom quicker, shortening the bouquet’s lifespan.

It’s best to place your flowers in a cooler environment with plenty of indirect light rather than directly within the sun’s rays or near a radiator.

Make sure to also keep flowers away from the fruit bowl, as ripening fruit such as bananas and apples produce an odourless gas called ethylene, which causes flowers to age and drop petals more quickly.

Change the vase water regularly

Make sure the water in your vase is clean and change it often to remove any bacteria. This should be done every two days, but you can also do it daily, especially for more delicate varieties.

If the vase water is visibly cloudy or has debris in it, this is a sign that it needs replacing with fresh water.

Use nourishing flower food

You often get a small sachet of liquid flower food with your bouquet, so make sure to add this to the water, when you first put them in a vase. To extend the bouquet’s shelf life, aim to add additional flower food each time that you replace the water.

If you can’t get your hands on proper flower food, don’t fret. You can make a homemade solution by adding two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of white vinegar to one litre of lukewarm water.

The sugar provides energy to nourish the flowers, while the white vinegar lowers the water’s pH, which improves water absorption and helps to remove bacteria from the water due to its antimicrobial properties.

Check on your flowers often and handle them with care

Regularly check up on your flowers and remove any wilting petals. This not only makes your bouquet look healthier but also prevents the spread of bacteria in the vase water.

Cutting off wilting foliage also gives new buds space to bloom, resulting in a flourishing bouquet that’s even bigger and more beautiful.

Though some flower varieties are highly durable, it’s a good idea to be gentle when handling your bouquet. Avoid crushing or squeezing the stems as this can cut off water uptake to the plant. Petals are particularly delicate – treat them with care to prevent any damage and keep them looking their best.

Conclusion

By following these simple tips and opting for long-lasting flower varieties, you can ensure yours and your m’s Mother’s Day blooms stay vibrant and beautiful for a whole week, or even longer!

Warm This Winter

I don’t know about you, but I’m blooming freezing. Getting up this morning I found frost over the windows and fog in the air, and I bundled myself up in my dressing gown and slippers, and wondered if I’d be able to afford the heating bill. In the day, when the kids are at school and I’m scurrying around working, it weighs less on my mind, but at night when we’re tucked up in bed, I want to make sure that my children, especially, are cosy.

The cost-of-living crisis and plummeting temperatures mean many of us are worrying about how to keep ourselves and our family warm, without spending too much money. To help me out, sleep experts at Bed Kingdom have sent over their top seven cost-effective tips and tricks for how to keep your bedroom warm this winter to ease my worries and make sure we all get a good night’s sleep.

How To Make Your Sheets Cosy

If you dread having to jump into bed to freezing cold sheets after a long day of work, it may be worth spending one minute heating your sheets with a hairdryer, and this problem will quickly go away.

To Safely heat your sheets and duvet with a hairdryer, remember to keep it at least six inches away from the fabric for safety precautions. Doing this quick, simple exercise will keep your bed warm and toasty, perfect for a cold winter’s evening.

Where To Put Your Hot Water Bottle

While it may be tempting to wrap your hot water bottle in a tight hug for heat, there may be a couple of methods worth trying to maximise its use.

Instead of placing the bottle in your bed before you jump in, simply get into bed and rest the bottle against your belly. Positioning the bottle on your belly will relax your muscles, heat your body and allow you to unwind for a better night’s sleep.

Save Money With Draught Proofing Tips

Cold draughts can wreak havoc in any home, infiltrating your room to reduce the efficiency of your heating system. There are a few easy draught proofing steps you can take to help prevent that sneaky cold air from affecting your interior spaces.

For DIYers and those looking for cost-effective methods, safely use a match or lighter to identify the exact spots where draught is causing a problem. By carefully moving the flame around window frames and doors, you can highlight the precise spots where cold draughts are escaping into your bedroom.

Tackle these cold spots with:

  • Cling film – an average brand-own 50m roll will only set you back £1.50-£2.50.
  • Bubble wrap – make sure to save some bubble wrap from your online shopping orders to help cover those areas where cold air is entering your home.
  • Draught excluders – available in various shapes and designs, they allow you to stop cold draughts from entering at the bottom of doors and windows without compromising your décor.

Draught proofing can help you save around £45 a year on fuel bills, especially if you take a more professional approach. For example:

  • Use DIY sheet plastics to protect your windows.
  • Applying insulation tape or self-adhesive foam strips on those spots where cold air is entering through your windows.

Prevent Heat Escaping Through The Floor

Around 10% of heat loss in a home occurs through floors. The likelihood of losing heat through your floors is higher for those with wooden or laminate surfaces. Rugs can be an incredibly effective addition to any bedroom, serving as an attractive, cosy piece of décor which also serves to insulate your floor and create a more comfortable environment.

Thanks to their great insulation properties and density, wool rugs are perfect for helping foster a warmth in your bedroom, slowing the transfer of heat into your flooring to help maintain a warmer interior.

How To Arrange Your Bedroom Furniture

A simple, yet effective solution to create a warmer, more comfortable bedroom, rearranging furniture and altering the layout of your room has proven to increase warmth. Where possible, ensure no furniture is against your radiators, allowing heat to be distributed across your room instead of being trapped against beds or cabinets.

Ideally, the length of your bed should not be up against a wall, but, if necessary, try to place your bed against an internal wall rather than an external wall, as this will reduce the amount of cold air reaching your body from the surface.

DIY Radiator Hacks

Radiators are one of the most important elements of any home’s heating system, but there are a few things you should know to help them run as efficiently as possible. Up to 40% of heat can be lost from radiators through poorly insulated walls, but a couple of cost-effective hacks can help save some of that much needed warmth.

Placing sheets of foil, or even tin foil, behind your radiators will reflect heat energy back into your room that would otherwise be wasted.

If you have wall space directly above your radiator, putting up shelves can be useful in saving heat and reducing your bills. Instead of allowing the heat to rise to the ceiling, shelves will help throw it forward into your room, creating a cosier space.

Homeowners are also reminded to bleed their radiators ahead of the winter weather setting in. If your radiators are making gurgling noises or remain cold at the top when the heating is on, then bleeding your radiator will solve the issue and make your bedroom warmer.

Buy A High Tog Duvet

Picking the right duvet to keep you warm during the winter ultimately depends on each individual and how low the temperature drops. Generally, duvets of 13.5-tog or higher are recommended during cold winter periods, at an average price of between £15 and £25. If you find yourself to be too hot in bed, a lighter tog may be more suitable, and if you struggle to keep warm during the colder months, you may have to go all the way up to a 15-tog duvet at a usual cost of £20-£30.

Cotton sheets of various types are recommended during winter for a cosy night’s sleep. If you’re looking for the warmest option, look no further than flannel sheets. Due to excellent insulation, thickness and breathable fabrics, these sheets will allow you to enjoy a warm evening in bed while the cold weather rages outside.

How To Do Halloween On A Budget

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out top tips from interior design experts at Porcelain Superstore for how to do Halloween on a budget, but still get the most fun from your home this spooky season.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

My children absolutely love everything about Halloween, from the pumpkin carving to the spooky movies to the excessive allowance of sweet treats, in our house Halloween is all about creativity and having fun. With circumstances as they are, we want to try and keep the costs down on celebrating, but still make sure our kids have the best time possible. Luckily, you don’t need to spend a fortune to achieve a spooky and festive atmosphere in your home, so the interior design experts at Porcelain Superstore have sent over seven tips  on preparing for spooky season without breaking the bank!

How To Do Halloween On A Budget

1. Upcycle And Repurpose

Scour your home for items that can be repurposed for a budget-friendly and eco-conscious approach to Halloween decor. Neglected glass jars can be converted  into sinister potion bottles with a touch of paint and eerie labels. Worn-out sheets that have been forgotten in your linen closet can be effortlessly transformed into ghost. The key is to let your imagination run wild and get inventive with items that are going unused and unwanted.

2. DIY Paper Jack-O’-Lanterns

Paper jack-o’-lanterns can be created with orange and black construction paper. Cut out pumpkin shapes and give them spooky faces with a trusty black marker, and decorate them with any crafty bits you have waiting to be used. These handcrafted jack-o’-lanterns make fun and versatile decorations, whether you hang them in your windows for passersby to admire or string them together into bunting to enhance the festive atmosphere in your home.

3. Mason Jar Lanterns

Transform ordinary mason jars into spooky lanterns that cast a magical glow in your home. Paint the jar with either orange or black paint for a classic Halloween look, or, if you’re feeling more artistic, you can create a stunning stained glass effect using tissue paper and glue. Put battery-operated tea lights into the jars and watch as they come to life with a spooky and enchanting glow. Scatter them around your home, hang them from tree branches, or use them to line your walkway, creating an inviting yet eerie atmosphere.

4. Spooky Window Silhouettes

Create spooky silhouettes that can captivate both your household and passersby by using black paper and cutting out shapes like bats, cats, witches, and skeletons. Trace or print these shapes onto the black paper, carefully cut them out, and use tape to attach them to your windows. As daylight turns to dusk, the shadowy figures will come to life, providing a spine-tingling effect that will send shivers down your visitors’ spines.

5. Craft Halloween Wreaths

Welcome guests with a unique Halloween touch by crafting your own wreaths that don’t break the bank. By using materials from the pound shop and your back garden, like branches, leaves, or pinecones, transform these natural elements into a bewitching base with black or orange spray paint. Add some plastic spider webs, spiders, and a splash of ribbon, and you’ve got an affordable Halloween wreath that sets the stage for a festive celebration.

Halloween Stickers

6. Decorate Your Pumpkin Differently

Skip the traditional carving and get creative with paint and embellishments from your craft box. Acrylic paint, glitter, and even fabric scraps can be used to give your pumpkins a unique and personalized look, and these decorated pumpkins will stay fresh for a longer period so you can get even more pleasure from them!

7. Budget-Friendly Halloween Decorations

Don’t underestimate the budget-friendly Halloween decorations treasure trove waiting for you at your local pound shop or discount retailer. These stores often carry an array of inexpensive candles, fake spider webs, plastic skeletons, and other spooky items that can add a festive touch to your home without hitting your budget too hard. Take advantage of the wide selection to complement your DIY creations and enhance the overall Halloween ambience in your home. These affordable additions can significantly impact the overall spooky atmosphere you want to achieve.

How To Budget Finances In Your Family

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I learn how to budget finances in the family, and how a budgeting calculator can make the job easier for people who are bad with numbers like me!

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

I’m notoriously bad with numbers. I read them wrongly, reverse them, forget them within moments of looking at them, and struggle with a fuzzy scream in my head when I try and add them together. Therefore, it’s probably no surprise that I’m similar not very good with money. I’m cautious with it and careful with it, but I don’t understand the world of finance at all and always struggle with making a solid family budget.

Money matters are not just about paying bills, they’re about providing my family with stability and security, and giving my children opportunities. This is where budgeting comes into play, and why I want to learn how to get better at doing it. Learning how to budget finances in your family is not just a financial strategy; it’s a way to ensure the well-being and happiness of the people in your family too.

The Importance Of Budgeting Your Family Finances

1. Financial Stability

By budgeting properly, families will find it easier to live within their means, allocate money where it’s needed, and be sure that there is always enough money to cover essential expenses like housing, utilities, and food shopping. If you’ve got enough money in your budget, you can create a financial cushion by knowing how much you can set aside to be prepared for emergencies and unexpected expenses.

2. Goal Achievement

We all have financial goals, whether it’s saving for a dream holiday, buying a new house, or helping to support a child through University. A well-structured budget is like a roadmap that guides you toward these goals by helping you to allocate funds systematically, so you make progress toward your family’s aspirations.

3. Debt Management

Debt can be a heavy burden on a family’s finances. I have loan repayments and credit card repayments every month that I have to factor into my spending. With sensible budgeting, families can manage and reduce debt by allocating funds for regular payments and working out how to pay off loans faster. This will save you money in interest payments and free up funds for other priorities.

4. Peace of Mind

Financial stress can take a toll on family relationships and your mental health. I’ve spent more time than I can begin to explain worrying about money and how much I’ll have each month to give my children what they need. Budgeting provides peace of mind by offering a clear financial plan. When you know that the bills are paid, the savings are growing, and you have a plan for future expenses, you will find you have better mental and emotional health.

5. Teaching Financial Responsibility

While I’ve long thought we should have financial education in school as a specific subject, children do  learn by example from their parents. Budgeting provides an opportunity for parents to teach their kids valuable lessons about financial responsibility by involving children in budget discussions and decisions, and instilling good financial habits from a young age.

6. Improved Decision Making

Families will think critically about their financial decisions by making a clear planned out budget. It encourages them to prioritize needs over wants, save for future expenses, and make informed choices about spending. When everything is laid out in advance, and you can see what money is available, you’re much less likely to make impulse purchases or spend money on the wrong thing because you know exactly what’s got to go out ahead of time.

7. Preventing Overspending

Budgeting acts as a safeguard against overspending by setting spending limits for different things people in the family want, and tracking their expenditures. When you stick to a budget, you’re less likely to find yourself in financial trouble due to overspending.

8. Transparency and Communication

Budgeting encourages open communication within the family about financial matters, and honest communication is always important. Family members can discuss their financial goals, align their priorities, and work together toward a shared financial future.

How To Budget Finances In Your Family

  1. Gather Financial Information: Begin by collecting information about your family’s income, expenses, debts, and financial goals. Use a Credit Card Payment Calculator to work out how much you’re paying in interest on your credit card debt.
  2. Create a Budget: Use budgeting calculators, such as the Family Budget Planner, or spreadsheets to create a detailed budget. Allocate funds for essential expenses, savings, debt repayment, and discretionary spending.
  3. Track and Review: Regularly track your spending and compare it to your budget. Review your progress toward your financial goals and make adjustments as needed.
  4. Involve the Whole Family: Make budgeting a family affair. Discuss financial decisions with your spouse and involve your children in age-appropriate ways.
  5. Seek Professional Help: If your family’s financial situation is complex, consider consulting a financial advisor or counselor for guidance.

In conclusion, budgeting is not just the money itself; it’s about securing the future and well-being of your family. By practicing responsible financial management and sticking to a budget, you can provide financial stability, achieve your family’s goals, reduce stress, and teach valuable lessons about financial responsibility to the next generation. Budgeting is the key to unlocking the door to a brighter and more secure future for your family. Budgeting can be a challenge, but it is an important part of managing your finances and reaching your financial goals. By using a budgeting calculator, you can make the budgeting process easier and more efficient.

Tips For How To Enjoy A Multigenerational Holiday

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out tips from experts at Visit Dubai for how to enjoy a multigenerational holiday by catering to the different needs of the different age groups!

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Multigenerational Holidays

I don’t travel as much as I would like, and now I’m planning all future travels through the lense of a single mother, it makes things more complicated. I know it’s possible, and I know loads of single mums are brilliant at traveling with their children, but I’m not at that point yet. I’m used to having help and navigating travel and children alone feels daunting.

For this reason, a multigenerational holiday seems like the most sensible plan, and I’m not along in thinking so. A recent study found that multigenerational holidays will see a significant increase in 2023. According to the study by experts at Visit Dubai,  89% of holidayers are currently considering arranging a trip with at least three generations of their family.

95% of new parents are considering booking a group vacation so that they can alleviate some of the stress. 55% say it’s so important for them because it makes them feel less stressed than when they’re at home.

Grandparents are excited to celebrate milestone events; 33% say that the most important thing for them is to make sure there are enough activities for everyone, and a fifth say that it’s important for them to be able to indulge in luxury experiences.

Based on a survey of a thousand British adults, Visit Dubai’s research shows that families are increasingly looking for opportunities to spend quality time together, with 70% saying they want to make memories that last a lifetime while on vacation.

There are many reasons why a multigenerational holiday can be a good idea for a single mother. Here are a few of the most important:

  • It can provide much-needed support. Raising children as a single parent can be challenging, and a multigenerational holiday can provide much-needed support from grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other family members. This can be especially helpful if you need someone to watch your children while you relax or take some time for yourself.
  • It can help to strengthen family bonds. A multigenerational holiday is a great opportunity to spend quality time with your family and create lasting memories. This can help to strengthen family bonds and create a sense of togetherness.
  • It can be more affordable. If you are traveling with children, a multigenerational holiday can be more affordable than traveling with just your children. This is because you can split the cost of accommodation, activities, and food with other family members.
  • It can be more fun. Having more people to travel with can make a holiday more fun. There will be more people to share activities with, and there will always be someone to talk to or play with.

How To Enjoy A Multigenerational Holiday

Of course, there are some challenges to consider when planning a multigenerational holiday. For example, you will need to make sure that everyone’s interests are taken into account when planning activities. You will also need to be prepared to compromise and make changes to your plans if necessary. However, if you are willing to put in the effort, a multigenerational holiday can be a truly rewarding experience for everyone involved.

What Generations Want

Just over a quarter (26%) said they wanted to make up for the time they felt they had lost during the pandemic, and more than half (52%) said they were looking forward to experiencing and discovering shared interests with their family. Four thirds (43%) of those polled said that the most priceless moments of quality time they had had were the ones they had spent on vacation with their entire family.

Good value (61%) and good weather (60%) are parents’ top holiday priorities, while grandparents place a high value on having a stress-free and relaxing experience (49%) Unsurprisingly, the younger generation favors a wide range of activities (68%) and entertainment (65%) because they just want to have fun.

One thing that everyone in the family can agree on is that good weather is the most important thing. Parents (60 percent), grandparents (52%), and children (46%) agree.

Top Holiday Priorities By Generation

Parents:

Good value (61%)

Good weather (60%)

Plenty of activities for everyone (54%)

A stress-free and relaxing experience (52%)

Entertainment (50%)

Children:

Lots of kid’s activities (68%)

Entertainment (65%)

Good weather (46%)

Plenty of activities for everyone (37%)

Safety (25%)

Grandparents:

Good weather (52%)

A stress-free and relaxing experience (49%)

Good value (47%)

Safety (37%)

Entertainment (32%)

Conclusion

Making sure everybody feels like their holiday needs are being respected and considered, as well as picking somewhere fun in the sun, sounds like the best way to make a multigenerational holiday work.

Here I Go Again On My Own

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I share the new life I’m figuring out, and how I hope to support my children as a single mum, because here I go again on my own.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

My life has changed a lot over the last few weeks. Changes that I haven’t fully processed yet, and changes I’m not sure I’ll ever fully understand, but changes I am living with nonetheless. And living with them means, for me at least, writing about them. Because writing is how I think most clearly.

Endings

Work

The first change I shared a couple of weeks ago. Through our company, Siren Stories, we primarily made our money from the advertising contract for ads running on The Table Read Magazine, this site, and the Hollowhood site. This was doing a solid and reliable turnover, and we were able to support our children, pay rent and bills, and occasionally have a treat. It was work we loved, work that made us happy, and work we were proud of.

Then the advertising contract was ended, unexpectedly, and our income was lost. I had a somewhat public meltdown about that experience on TikTok, and while it is embarassing in hindsight, I also don’t blame myself. We were thrown into a crisis of how are we going to afford to live and raise our children when our income vanished overnight.

Family

This one is harder to talk about and, out of respect for my ex partner and my children, I won’t go into detail. Suffice to say that my relationship with my fiance and father of my children came to an end. I move forward as a single mother to two little girls who I love with my whole being, a broken heart, and hope that, one day, life will feel good again.

Home

For now, we are staying with my parents. We’re incredibly fortunate that our family is close and full of love, and until we can afford and find a new home to start our life over in, we have somewhere warm and safe to stay, where we are loved and supported no matter what. I know how rare that is and I am incredibly grateful for it.

Beginnings

Work

To try and make sure I can provide for my girls, I am going to be sharing the work I am doing more regularly. I hope it won’t be annoying, and I’d ask that if you see me talking incessantly about my work you’ll be patient, and maybe even share it to help me get word out. I’ve developed new advertising relationships that may one day grow to the success of the previous contract, but are still new, so until then, I’m working on more options.

I love my job, I’m good at my job, and I want to give my girls a stable life through my job.

The Table Read Magazine – I’ve never charged for the promotion we do because I know how hard it is to be a creative with a small budget. While that won’t change, I’m going to be promoting the two paid options that are available for those who value the promotional services I provide, and can afford to pay for them.

We receive hundreds of emails a day and the wait for work to be posted is averaging at 2 months due to the number of contributors wanting that space. To have your interview/article/video put out within one week of submission, the charge is £10. To have your interview/article/video put out same day/next day of submission, the charge is £20. ORDER HERE. I want to keep this affordable and accessible, while still earning an income from the effort I put in each day.

New Shop – I am working hard to grow a new online shop selling quirky, beautiful, and interesting products from around the world, including jewellery, incense, and ornaments. It is small, but it is growing, and I truly believe in the quality of the products I am selling and hope to keep selling more and bringing in new stock. I hope to establish a small business with happy customers, and suppliers that are proud to see the work I do promoting their creations.

In my shop, you can also find my artwork and books, and I hope you’ll love those too.

Writing Advice – On Ko-Fi, I am posting writing advice articles filled with the hints and tips I’ve learned over the last few years to support and encourage anybody wanting to write. I reference popular fiction and try to keep everything as accessible and relatable as possible, because the world needs more stories, and I want to help makes yours one of them.

If you enjoy what I’m writing about and find it useful, please consider buying me a coffee through my ko-fi account. It’s not essential, the info is there for free for all, but it’s always appreciated.

Family

I don’t know how this will new family will work yet, it’s such a huge change for us all. Right now I’m struggling to see past the sadness, but what I do know is my little girls love and adore their family both on my side and his, so however this new setup works, it won’t be bad. Just different.

Home

Where will we be living this time next year? I don’t know. But I hope we find somewhere. A new little home just for us. A space where my daughters can grow up and feel safe and loved, just as they did in our last home. I’ll keep you posted.

Starting over yet again is harder than I can explain, but I’ll do it. I’ve got family, friends, and a determination to put one foot in front of the other foot, no matter what happens.
