Word Nerds

If you’re a word nerd like me, puzzles and intellectual challenges that are built around the use of language are the perfect way to have fun. Why shoot monsters with guns on the TV when you can be doing a crossword or playing Scrabble?

While we used to be stuck to the old school pen and paper, the realm of online gaming is now the perfect playground for wordy birds like me! From texting my ma my daily Wordle results to testing my vocabulary in crosswords, I thought I’d share some of the best online games for word nerds, and why they’re so much fun.

Online Games For Word Nerds

Expanding Vocabulary

As a writer, a big vocabulary is something I value and appreciate. While reading is the obvious way to grow your vocabulary, playing word games can do the same thing, just in a different way. When you play word games, you are constantly exposed to new words because the games require you to use a wide vocabulary to win.

Doing online crossword puzzles is a brilliant option if you’re a word nerd looking to grow your vocabulary. The clues in crossword puzzles often require you to know the meaning of obscure or uncommon words, and if you don’t know them immediately, as you solve the clues around those words, you’ll be able to start filling in the blanks to work out what they are. Once you’ve got the word, and the meaning from the clue, you’ve immediately got new language!

Relaxing Escapism

When life is stressing you out, and you want to just lie back and rest but your brain is still spinning, online games offer a unique form of escapism that challenges you without putting you in a stressful situation.

I’ve always found wordsearches to be a perfect way to relax. You don’t need to think too hard or use a lot of brainpower to solve a word search because there’s no clues to solve and it’s not a fast moving competitive activity so you’re not under pressure. This makes them perfect for people who want to relax but also want to feel a sense of accomplishment. When you solve a wordsearch, you get a small hit of dopamine, which can boost your mood and make you feel good.

Fast Thinking Challenges

I can’t think quickly with many things, but words I can do! Fast-thinking word games mean you have to think quickly and make decisions under pressure, which can be exciting if you’re in the mood for a challenge. You get a great sense of accomplishment as the timer goes fast, but you go faster.

Letter Scramble games are one of my favourite because you have to take in all the different letters that are being thrown at you at once and form words out of them quickly, both before too many more letters appear, and before your timer runs down. Overcoming challenges and making yourself think quickly is really satisfying and a real confidence booster.

Bonding With Other Word Nerds

As I mentioned above, my mother and I share our Daily wordle games, but the games sharing feature means you can also share their results on social media, which can lead to friendly competition and bragging rights. While the rest of the world is arguing about politics, finding something as simple as Wordle to bond over is like calm in the storm.

Anyone can pick up Wordle and start playing, my ten year old has given it a go any times, but it takes skill and practice to get the best scores. Sharing those accomplishments with like minded word nerds is a lovely way to keep in touch with friends and family as you celebrate or commiserate over one another’s efforts.

Conclusion

Playing online word games helps me relax, connects me with my family, and gives me challenges that are stimulating and make me feel a sense of accomplishment. I hope some of these games will do the same for you, and don’t forget to share your results!

How I’m Using Games To Teach My Children About Money

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I share my experiences of using games to teach my children about money, and why I think financial education is important for kids.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Teaching Children About Money

I’m always been on the lookout for creative and engaging ways to teach my children about the things I’m not personally an expert in. There’s so much I want them to know about, but unless it’s story craft or how to cook vegetarian food for people who love spice and garlic, I need a bit of help.

One of these areas is finance. I’m terrible at maths, really struggle with reading numbers properly, and am absolutely not a financial wizard. But I’d love it if my children could go into adulthood with more confidence and understanding about numbers and money than I’ve ever had.

One way I’ve found to be really helpful is online games to teach them about money. I’m going to share my theories about why online games are a great way to explain money to kids, and share a couple of example of games I’ve found success with.

Captivating Learning Experience

Children are naturally drawn to technology and interactive activities rather than the more passive and traditional ways of learning. Online games made to teach kids about finances feature colorful graphics, relatable characters, and interactive scenarios. This style of education not only captures a child’s attention, but it’ll also keep them engaged and motivated to stay learning.

Basic Maths Skills

Online money games can be a great way to teach children simple maths. They can provide a fun and interactive way to learn about addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

For instance, the Treze Coins game gets children to make the correct amount of change based on the value of the coins in their purse. My kids have done lots of money based homework to teach them about our currency, and using an online game over the holidays to just reinforce that education, and keep it fresh and relevant in their minds, is a super helpful tool.

Real-life Simulations

One of the most significant advantages of using online games to teach children about money is the ability to create realistic simulations of real-life financial situations. These games offer a safe and controlled environment where children can make decisions about saving, spending, investing, and even entrepreneurship. Through virtual scenarios, children learn the consequences of their choices, helping them develop critical thinking and decision-making skills that are directly transferable to the real world.

Immediate Feedback and Rewards

Online games often provide immediate feedback and rewards for actions taken by players, which reinforces positive financial choices. When a child makes a sensible move within a game, they receive positive feedback and rewards, creating a sense of accomplishment. This, in turn, encourages them to make similar informed decisions in real-life situations, and reinforces their understanding of financial principles.

Crypto-Currency

Online games can be a great way to explain cryptocurrency to children, which I am absolutely not in a position to do!

Bitcoin Bubble Blaster
Bitcoin Bubble Blaster

The Bitcoin Bubble Blaster game is the perfect introduction to the world of crypto currency, and even I’ve learned something. While the game itself is super traditional, shoot the bubbles at each other to match up in three or more sets so they explode, each round introduces a new currency. This way of familiarising yourself with currency means that it feels like a more accessible world to learn about.

Learning through Mistakes

Failure is a really important part of the learning process, and when they’re playing online games, children are safe to make mistakes and learn  the consequences of those choices without actually causing real world damage to their parent’s purses. By learning from their virtual mistakes, children can start to recognise the traps of financial risk taking, develop resilience and become better equipped to handle financial challenges later in life.

Holistic Skill Development

Financial literacy extends beyond mere money management. It encompasses skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, planning, and communication – all of which are honed through online games. Children learn to strategize, collaborate with others, and adapt to changing circumstances, which fosters a holistic skill set that prepares them for a successful future.

Conclusion

Using technology and gaming in education strikes me as a really sensible way of embracing the modern world, and I’ve witnessed firsthand the positive impact that online games can have. While I was growing up it just wasn’t an option, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. These games offer an engaging and immersive way of making things like finances, which might otherwise be a dull subject, an exciting adventure of learning and discovery.

There’s a whole world of online gaming out there, plus I highly recommend Scratch if your children have any interest in coding and want to design games themselves! My ten year old is busy designing simple, but functioning, video games and getting to grips with coding in a way that blows my mind.

How Has Barbie Impacted Fashion?

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out how the Barbie movie is having a massive impact, not only on the box office, but also on the fashion world, and which celebrities are nailing it.

Barbiecore

JJ Barnes in the Barbie Box
JJ Barnes in the Barbie Box

Barbiecore is taking over our wardrobes, and our houses, and I for one am utterly and completely shamelessly here for it! Not only did I buy a hot pink velour tracksuit with Barbie symbols embossed in the fabric and a glittery Barbie sign on the back (because I’m subtle), but I proudly wear it with anything pink I own.

The Barbiecore trend is characterized by its use of bright, vibrant colors, particularly pink, as well as its playful and feminine aesthetic. While promoting the movie, Margot Robbie rocked a variety of pink outfits, which has helped to further popularize the trend.

Barbiecore is not just about fashion, however. The trend also encompasses home decor, beauty, and lifestyle. Barbiecore homes feature bright pink accessories and decor, and the Barbiecore beauty looks use lots of pink and sparkly makeup and accessories, with a playful and carefree attitude.

How to embrace the Barbiecore aesthetic:

  • Choose bright, vibrant colors, especially pink.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns.
  • Experiment with exaggerated silhouettes.
  • Add statement accessories, such as oversized sunglasses or a beaded necklace.
  • Have fun with your look and don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through.

Barbiecore outfits:

  • A pink mini dress with matching heels and a statement necklace.
  • A white top with a pink skirt and pink sunglasses.
  • A denim jacket with a pink tank top and pink sneakers.
  • A pink swimsuit with a pink bucket hat and pink sandals.

Barbiecore home decor:

  • A pink sofa with a white throw blanket and pink pillows.
  • A pink rug with a white coffee table and pink lamps.
  • A pink bookshelf with white books and pink accessories.
  • A pink bedroom with a white bed frame and pink curtains.

Celebrity Barbiecore Fashions

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film purportedly made an unparalleled $155m in the first week. With Barbiecore currently a key 2023 style, celebs are likewise hoping to leave their imprint with Barbie-inspired outfits, but I wanted to know who is doing it best. To help me out, style industry specialists at JOOR checked out the star name Barbiecore looks on Pinterest to find which celebrities are doing it best!

# Celebrity  Number of pins
1 Margot Robbie 477
2 Zendaya 298
3 Ariana Grande 238
4 Gigi Hadid 203
5 Anne Hathaway 171
= 6 Dua Lipa 109
= 6 Lizzo 109
8 Vanessa Hudgens 46
9 Florence Pugh 45
10 Kacey Musgraves 34

Margot Robbie

It’s not surprise that JOOR found that Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, defeats all comers, with 477 pins on Pinterest.

Not only did Margot’s on-set Barbie closet start our style envy, during the press tour Margot honoured her character with various different famous Barbie doll looks, from 2015 Pink and Fabulous to the 1985 Day to Night edition. Margot, as they say, understood the assignment!

Zendaya

Coming in second is Zendaya, with her Barbiecore style counting up 298 pins on Pinterest. There truly is nothing Zendaya can’t pull off, and less than a year ago, Zendaya had the web in a craze when worked Barbiecore in head-to-toe Valentino pink

Ariana Grande

Following close behind is our melodic pop princess Ariana Grande in third, who piled up 238 pins for her Barbiecore closet. From street style to onstage to filming a music video, Ariana isn’t too shy to add a bit of Barbiecore to any look.

Gigi Hadid

In fourth is supermodel Gigi Hadid with 203 pins of her Barbiecore styles. Gigi, who is something of a fashione expert, can skillfully layer a Barbiecore look in the chicest way, from triple neon pink to a bubblegum-pink cashmere button up.

Anne Hathaway

Taking fifth spot is Anne Hathaway, with 171 pins on Pinterest for her Barbiecore style. Anne’s style development over the years has seen her in double denim and graphic tank tops on the red carpet in the mid 2000s, to working on the trend looks like Barbiecore, when she looked fabulous in a hot pink sequin Valentino mini dress just last year.

Conclusion

I hope this trend runs and runs. I love the bright colours and the fun, and it is such a great movie I know it’s going on my frequent views list!!!

How To Entertain Children On Rainy Days In The Summer Holidays

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out different ways to entertain children on rainy days in the summer holidays.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Rainy Days Of Summer

We are entering the six weeks summer holidays during one of the rainiest most miserable Julys I can remember. Our plans of beach trips, BBQs in the garden, dog walks and playground excursions look in serious jeopardy as the grey rain hammers against the windows, thunder rolls through the skies, and everybody huddles up inside wearing fluffy pyjamas all day.

Rainy days can be a drag for kids, especially when there’s no school to keep them busy and entertained during the day time. And if, like me, you’re a work from home parent, you won’t be able to spend all day every day setting up educational and exciting projects to keep your children amused.

However, do not fear. There are plenty of ways to keep them entertained, engaged, and even educated, on the gloomiest of days of the summer holidays!

How To Entertain Children On Rainy Days In The Summer Holidays

I’ve gathered up a wide range of suggestions for activities to entertain children on rainy days in the summer holidays. Some will need parent input, some will need a parent to casually observe, and some mean your children can just be left to it (this is when you want to get into a hot bath with a glass of wine and hide).

I am also sharing the educational benefits of each activity, so at the end of the day you can pat yourself on the head for a job well done (some of these are tenuous… but go with me.)

Build A Blanket Fort

If you’re willing to sacrifice your dining table for the day, building a blanket fort is a fantastic activity for children, and needs very little parental supervision. Gather blankets, cushions, and pegs, and let them turn your table and chairs into a den with no room for adults!

My girls love to build a blanket fort and it keeps them busy and entertained for ages, even after the fort is complete! Once they’re satisfied with the outside, they then fill the inside with piles of cushions and snacks, then disappear inside to play games or watch Netflix or giggle and whisper insults about the grown ups. The tidying up is always a bit exhausting, but the fun and activity of the fort makes it all worth it.

Educational benefits of building a blanket fort:

  • It helps children develop their problem-solving skills. When children are building a fort, they have to figure out how to use the materials they have to create a structure that is sturdy and secure. This helps them develop their problem-solving skills.
  • It helps children develop their imagination. When children are building a fort, they have to use their imagination to come up with a design. This helps them develop their imagination and creativity.
  • It helps children develop their teamwork skills. If children are building a fort with friends or siblings, they have to work together to get the job done. This helps them develop their teamwork skills.

Set Up A Scavenger Hunt

This requires a bit of advance work on your part, but it’s worth it. Give your children a list of treasures they have to find and gather from around the house, then send them scurrying away. You’ll have each found treasure excitedly presented to you, and there will be the possibility of competitive conflict, but it’s a great way to keep them busy and active.

You can either hide items for them to find and write clues, always popular but a lot more effort, or you can give them a list of general household items that they have to gather from what’s already there. A great way of deciding what to send them hunting for is to choose a theme, and vary it each time you do a scavenger hunt so the challenge is different each time.

Ideas for themes:

    • Colors: Have the kids find things that are a certain color, such as red, blue, or green.
    • Animals: Have the kids find things that are related to animals, such as stuffed animals, pictures of animals, or animal-shaped objects.
    • Food: Have the kids find things that are related to food, such as fruits, vegetables, or kitchen utensils.
    • Objects in the house: Have the kids find things that are commonly found in the house, such as a remote control, a book, or a shoe.

Educational benefits of a scavenger hunt:

  • Problem-solving: Scavenger hunts require children to use their problem-solving skills to figure out where the items are hidden. This can help them develop their critical thinking skills and learn how to approach problems in a systematic way.
  • Language skills: Scavenger hunts often involve reading clues, which can help children improve their reading comprehension skills. They also require children to communicate with each other, which can help them develop their verbal and nonverbal communication skills.
  • Math skills: Scavenger hunts can help children practice their math skills, such as counting, adding, and subtracting. For example, a scavenger hunt could involve finding a certain number of items or finding items that add up to a certain number.
  • Observation skills: Scavenger hunts require children to pay attention to their surroundings and look for clues. This can help them develop their observation skills and learn how to notice details.
  • Teamwork: Scavenger hunts can be a great way for children to learn how to work together as a team. This can help them develop their social skills and learn how to cooperate with others.
  • Memory skills: Scavenger hunts require children to remember the clues and the items they have found. This can help them develop their memory skills and learn how to retain information.
  • Creativity: Scavenger hunts can be a great way for children to use their imagination and creativity. For example, children might need to come up with creative ways to solve puzzles or find hidden items.

Play Online Games

My girls love playing games, and while we have obvious favourites on the PlayStation, Minecraft being right up there, sometimes it’s fun to have a bit more variety. When I was growing up we didn’t have access to anything beyond what we’d bought in the shops, but my kids are growing up in a world where online games are not only fun and interesting, they’re also free!

For instance, the ten year old loves games like Cross The Road. She has to concentrate and really practice, which is great for keeping her focused on an activity for a long time, plus she gets a real sense of accomplishment and treats us all to a rather startling cry of “YES!” when she gets her character through another level.

I am absolutely not cut out for home schooling, but I do want to keep her toe in the waters of school so going back in September isn’t too much of a shock. Setting up her with educational games that make learning fun, especially when it’s her least favourite subject maths, is a fantastic way of helping her without actually having to figure out how to teach her. In Aliens Vs Maths, draws her in with easy wins, but as it gets harder she is pushed to think more and really test herself.

For the seven year old, who is firmly embedded in the stage of all things pink and sparkly, UniKitty has her squealing with joy. And even though the ten year old reckons she’s too grown up for it, it invariably results in her busting in to show off how it’s really done. To help with her spellings, I get her to play Animal Words. She loves animals and it’s so easy to access just filling in the blanks that she feels confident and has fun.

Educational benefits of online games:

  • Problem-solving: Many online games require children to solve problems in order to progress. This can help them develop their critical thinking skills and learn how to approach problems in a systematic way.
  • Language skills: Some online games require children to read and understand instructions. This can help them improve their reading comprehension skills. They also require children to communicate with each other, which can help them develop their verbal and nonverbal communication skills.
  • Math skills: Some online games involve math problems. This can help children practice their math skills, such as counting, adding, and subtracting.
  • Social skills: Online games can be a great way for children to interact with other children from all over the world. This can help them develop their social skills and learn how to cooperate with others.
  • Creativity: Some online games require children to use their imagination and creativity. This can help them develop their creativity skills.

Arts And Crafts

My daughters love doing arts and crafts with a passion unknown to mankind. They are never happier than when there’s glitter, googly eyes, and pipecleaners scattered liberally across the room, and they’ve somehow manage to glue their faces to each other. For this reason, I recommend parental supervision as much as possible when you crack out that craft box.

For ideas of projects, there is no better platform than Pinterest. Search crafts for kids and spend half an hour pinning everything you think would work, and bam, you’ve got an entire summer of activities all sorted! Just remember to keep your vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth to hand… and maybe take out another mortgage to provide enough supplies for the enthusiasm they’re sure to throw at this activity.

Educational benefits of arts and crafts:

  • Fine motor skills: Fine motor skills are the small, precise movements that children use with their hands and fingers. Arts and crafts activities can help children develop these skills by requiring them to use their hands to manipulate materials such as paint, clay, and scissors.
  • Creativity: Arts and crafts activities allow children to express their creativity in a variety of ways. They can choose the materials they want to use, the colors they want to use, and the designs they want to create. This can help children develop their imagination and their ability to think outside the box.
  • Problem-solving skills: Arts and crafts activities can help children develop their problem-solving skills. For example, if a child is trying to create a specific design, they may need to figure out how to use the materials they have in order to achieve their desired result. This can help children learn how to think critically and solve problems.
  • Self-expression: Arts and crafts activities can help children express themselves in a safe and healthy way. They can use art to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This can help children develop their self-esteem and their ability to cope with difficult emotions.
  • Social skills: Arts and crafts activities can help children develop their social skills. They can work together with other children to create projects, share ideas, and give and receive feedback. This can help children learn how to cooperate with others and how to resolve conflicts.
  • Academic skills: Arts and crafts activities can also help children develop their academic skills. For example, they can help children learn about colors, shapes, and numbers. They can also help children develop their fine motor skills, which can be important for handwriting and other tasks.

Play Board Games

Board games are coming back in popularity. Yes, you can get versions of most games on the PlayStation, but there’s something really lovely about sitting around a table as a family, rolling dice, and playing a proper old fashioned game. Plus there’s so many games on the market that you’ll find something to suit every age group!

Hungry Hungry Hippos

You will never see my seven year old happier than when she is savagely hammering away on her hungry hungry hippo to make sure he’s the hungriest hippo of all. And who doesn’t love this game? It’s suitable for everyone from the small to the big, it’s noisy, it’s chaotic, and it’s weirdly satisfying.

Tension

For the ten year old, she likes something that makes her think, but is still accessible to the little one. With tension, we all have to really think and under pressure, trying to name ten things in a given category. It’s also a lot of fun to stare down your competitors, add to the tension and pressure, and then crow in glory when you’ve made them forget something as simple as vanilla flavour ice cream.

Educational benefits of playing board games:

  • Problem-solving skills: Board games often require children to solve problems in order to win. For example, they may need to figure out how to get their pieces around the board or how to collect the most resources. This can help children learn how to think critically and solve problems.
  • Critical thinking skills: Board games often require children to think critically about the game and their opponents’ moves. This can help children learn how to make strategic decisions and how to think ahead.
  • Math skills: Many board games involve some element of math, such as counting, adding, and subtracting. This can help children practice their math skills in a fun and engaging way.
  • Reading skills: Some board games require children to read instructions or cards. This can help children practice their reading skills and learn new vocabulary.
  • Language skills: Board games often require children to communicate with each other in order to play the game. This can help children practice their language skills and learn how to cooperate with others.
  • Social skills: Board games can be a great way for children to learn how to interact with others in a positive way. They can learn how to take turns, how to resolve conflicts, and how to be a good sport.
  • Memory skills: Some board games require children to remember information, such as the location of pieces or the rules of the game. This can help children develop their memory skills.
  • Creativity: Some board games allow children to be creative, such as when they are designing their own game pieces or creating their own strategies. This can help children express their creativity and learn how to think outside the box.

If all else fails:

If it’s still raining, you’re still stressed with work, and your children still need to be entertained, please don’t give yourself a hard time for sitting them in front of the TV.

I don’t know about you, but a lot of my childhood school breaks were spent staring at the TV because both my parents worked hard and weren’t able to occupy me every given moment, and because, let’s be honest, TV is great. Whether it’s cartoons, movies, or even weird YouTubers competing in challenges that seem to involve more slime than is necessary, your kids can have a great time and enjoy their holidays by just zoning out for a while.

Not every day needs to be about making special memories, and life is hard, tiring, and full of stress. We work so hard to try and keep food on the table and bills paid, and children sometimes have to sit aside and watch TV for you do it. Don’t add not creating constant educational and entertaining opportunities to your list of pressures. Let them watch TV, eat junk food, and just be a kid who doesn’t have to go to school for a few weeks. They’ll be fine, I promise. You’ve got this!

I Discovered The Cost Of Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out the AirBnB Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse available to book now, and ask how much it would cost to buy one myself!

The Barbie Movie

The Barbie Movie is coming, and I am here for it! The merch, the music, and the movie are all delighting my love of all things ridiculous. I’m now the proud owner of a bright pink velure tracksuit, complete with Barbie logo in silver sparkles, and I am beyond excited to go to the cinema and watch the film!

Growing up, I loved my Barbies, and now I have a seven year old daughter with a collection of Barbie dolls that dwarfs what I accumulated in the 1980s. However, neither she, nor I, has owned a Barbie DreamHouse. Alas.

When I found out there’s a real life Barbie DreamHouse available on AirBnB, I absolutely had to know more. What does it cost to stay there? And what would I need to spend to buy one myself?!

 Barbie’s DreamHouse

  • Barbie’s DreamHouse in Malibu, California, is open for Airbnb guest bookings on July 17 to celebrate the Barbie movie.
  •  Luxury real estate experts at RubyHome have estimated the property’s sale value at $10 million (£7.93 million) or $2,880 (£2,267) per square foot, which is more than three times the median price in Malibu
  •  Brits would need to make at least £1.57 million per year to purchase.

Buy Barbie’s DreamHouse

For the valuation, specialists at RubyHome, looked at the typical deal cost for equivalent Malibu homes with comparable conveniences, in addition to an extra premium of 10% to gauge the market cost for the stand-out home.

The DreamHouse is a 3,500-square-foot all-pink single-family home highlighting a pool, ocean views, and an inside planned by Jonathan Adler, complete with Barbie furniture.

“Placed perfectly above the beach with panoramic views, this life-size toy pink mansion is a dream come true!” reads the Airbnb listing.

As per CMLS information ordered by RubyHome, comparable homes nearby, with a similar size, pool, and views, go for $9.1 million (£7.21m).

Taking into account the manor’s notable plan and Barbie’s social worth, it could knock the cost of the doll’s DreamHouse to an eye-watering $10 million (£7.93m) – three times the typical home estimation in Malibu – or $2,880 (£2,267) per square foot.

Rent Barbie’s DreamHouse

In the event that Barbie turned into a landowner, renting the property would get an expected $77,412 (£55,416) each month.

Costs associated with the sale of Barbie are estimated to be $780,000 (£614,273).

With a 20% initial installment, Brits need to make at least $2 million (£1.57m) a year to manage the cost of the home.

Airbnb booking opens on July 17 and four lucky visitors will get a one-night stay for two at the property on July 21 and 22.

The house is exclusive and not right now available to be purchased.

RubyHome

Tony Mariotti, CEO of the Malibu brokerage RubyHome, explained that Barbie’s marketing has been everywhere in the build up to the film’s release. This one of a kind property showed up on Airbnb, driving enthusiastic fans to race to see the genuine dollhouse, complete with a maximalist Barbie-themed inside.

The property’s 3,500 square feet, views of the Pacific Ocean, private pool, and completely unique design result in a high price tag, even though it won’t be for everyone. How much demand the Airbnb listing generates over the two nights it is open to guests will be fascinating.

The Most Heartbreaking Break-Up Songs To Break Your Heart To

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I share the most heartbreaking break-up songs to listen to when your heart is broken.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

If your heart is broken, and you want to break it more, these are the most heart breaking break up songs I can think of. But feel free to comment with more.

Love Of My Life – Queen

“Love of My Life” is from Queen’s 1975 album, A Night at the Opera. This sentimental ballad, features a harp played by Brian May and was written by Freddie Mercury, inspired by his relationship with Mary Austin.

The song is a slow, acoustic ballad, with Mercury’s vocals accompanied by a simple piano melody. The lyrics are simple and heartfelt, expressing Mercury’s love for Austin.

It is also a ruiner of mascara.

Only Love Can Hurt Like This – Paloma Faith

“Only Love Can Hurt Like This” by Paloma Faith was written by Diane Warren and released as the second single from her third album, A Perfect Contradiction in 2014.

The song’s lyrics describe the pain of heartbreak, and how love can be both beautiful and destructive, and can both bring joy and pain.

And it will make you bawl.

No More I Love You’s – Annie Lennox

“No More ‘I Love You’s” by Annie Lennox is from her second solo album, Medusa. The song was written by David Freeman and Joseph Hughes, who recorded it as the Lover Speaks in 1986.

The song is a powerful ballad about the end of a relationship. The lyrics are full of emotion, as Lennox sings about the pain of heartbreak.

And if you can breathe straight after, you weren’t listening.

The Winner Takes It All – ABBA

“The Winner Takes It All” by ABBA was released as the first single from the group’s seventh studio album, Super Trouper in 1980.

The song was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, two members of ABBA. It is sung from the perspective of a woman who has been left by her husband for another woman. The lyrics describe the pain of heartbreak and the narrator’s feelings of inadequacy.

Whether it’s performed in Mama Mia!, or the original by the band, you’ll break.

Death By A Thousand Cuts – Taylor Swift

“Death by a Thousand Cuts” was written and recorded Taylor Swift, and released on August 23, 2019, as the third single from her seventh studio album, Lover. The song is a pop ballad with elements of country music. It has been praised for its honest and vulnerable lyrics, as well as Swift’s emotional vocals.

The song’s lyrics describe the pain of heartbreak. The narrator sings about how her ex-partner has moved on with someone else, and how she is struggling to cope with the loss.

If you know anything about me, you know Taylor Swift speaks to my soul. And knows how to access my pain.

You Broke Me First – Tate McRae

“You Broke Me First” by Tate McRae was released on February 28, 2020, as the lead single from her debut EP, All the Things I Never Said.

The song was written by McRae, Victoria Zaro, and Blake Harnage. It is sung from the perspective of a woman who has been left by her partner, and describes the pain of heartbreak and the narrator’s determination to move on.

And it makes the heart hurt.

I Can’t Make You Love Me – Bonnie Raitt

“I Can’t Make You Love Me” was written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin and recorded by Bonnie Raitt for her eleventh studio album, Luck of the Draw in 1991.

The song is a slow-paced ballad about heartbreak and unrequited love. The lyrics describe the narrator’s longing for someone who does not love her back.

And yes you’ll sob if you know that feeling.

Not Like Loving You – Nell Bryden

“Not Like Loving You” by Nell Bryden was released in 2009 as the lead single from her sixth studio album, What Does It Take. The song was written by Bryden and produced by David Kershenbaum.

“Not Like Loving You” is a folk-pop ballad telling the story of a woman who is struggling to move on from a failed relationship.

Let the song access that pain.

Need You Now – Lady A

“Need You Now” by country music group Lady A was released in 2009 as the lead single from their second studio album. The song was written by Lady A members Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood, and Hillary Scott, along with Josh Kear.

“Need You Now” tells the story of a woman who is feeling lonely and lost after a breakup.

And that is a sadness that you need to feel sometimes.

I Will Always Love You – Dolly Parton

“I Will Always Love You” was originally written and recorded by singer-songwriter Dolly Parton, although the version by Whitney Houston ultimately became more well known.

It is a song about love, loss, and moving on.

And I defy anyone heartbroken not to sob.

If you have any more songs to add, please comment. We all need a good cry sometimes.

Which Of The UK’s Favourite Romantic Movies Should I Add To My Watch List?

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out the UK’s favourite romantic movies to get inspiration for what I should watch next, because who doesn’t love a bit of schmultz on a Sunday evening?

Watch List

Movies are a massive part of our family culture. Sunday afternoon is dedicated to films, we regularly let the kids stay up late on a school night if a particular movie came up in dinner conversation, and cinema trips are a joy we don’t get often enough.

The ten year old has recently discovered the wonders of grown up films, and has a particular penchent for the monster movie genre. However, we watched Titanic and she was absolutely captivated for the entire three hours, and has talked about it non stop ever since. Therefore, I want to start branching her out a little and find more films she can enjoy, and romance is definitely a genre that is just starting to pique her interest.

To help me decide what films we should prioritise,  CasinoBee.com sent over the results of their new study that looked at Google searches for 100 of the most talked-about romantic movies on lists like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes to work out the UK’s favourite romantic movies.

The UK’s Favourite Romantic Movies

Love, Actually (2003) – 159,000 searches

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the release of Love Actually, written by Richard Curtis, quite possibly of the most well known romantic film across the world right up ’til now, and it shocks no one that it takes the top spot on this list.

Love Actually has a mostly British ensemble cast, many of whom had previously collaborated with Curtis on film and television projects. The film explores various aspects of love through ten distinct stories involving a variety of people, many of whom are shown to be intertwined as the plot progresses.

We do love a bit of Love Actually, but I think we’ll save this for Christmastime to get the most out of it.

In the Heights (2021) – 150,000 searches

In The Heights is one of the numerous successful projects with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s name on it, but one I’ve actually never seen! This more recent release comes in second. The movie adaptation, despite the fact that it was originally a musical, perfectly captures the sincere celebration of culture and love, and it is brimming with upbeat and motivating energy from the very beginning to the very end.

My children all love a musical, Mama Mia! is a staple of musical cinema viewing, so this could definitely top this list!

Notting Hill (1999) – 134,000 searches

Many fans of romance would contend that it’s anything but a proper rom-com if it doesn’t have Hugh Grant in it. For many years to come, the romantic tale of a British bookshop owner and a well-known American actress falling in love will serve as the gold standard, and is one I watched time and time again with my mother.

I’m just a girl… standing in front of a boy…

Oh my heart. Yes this is definitely going on the list.

Belfast (2021) – 116,000 searches

Belfast is not primarily a romance novel because it is told from the perspective of a young boy’s childhood in Northern Ireland’s capital in 1969. However, Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Dornan’s chemistry as the boy’s parents is captivating, and this movie will captivate you with multiple types of love.

I’ve not seen this one, but I love Catriona Balfe (my youngest daughter’s middle name is Claire for a reason, hello Outlander fans!) and I’m living with a family of McKinneys, so Northern Ireland is a strong feature in my life. On the list!

Beauty And The Beast (2017) – 109,000 searches

Disney’s original from 1991 got its surprisingly realistic remake in 2017, and it is regarded as one of Disney’s best, just outperformed by The Lion Ruler. It was impossible for the remake to fail to deliver the magic we all anticipated because Emma Watson played the unconventional and outspoken Belle, Luke Evans played the brutish Gaston, and names like Emma Thompson, Stanley Tucci, and Ian McKellen gave life to the furniture in the castle.

Even though this isn’t a film I particularly loved, I was born in the 80’s and grew up with classic Disney, I think all the kids would connect to this. Maybe on the list… but I’d rather watch the original.

Dirty Dancing (1987): 88,000 searches

We’ll never forget Baby and Johnny’s iconic love story or the electrifying chemistry between Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze. This film gave us one of the most recognizable soundtracks, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” right after the well-known line “No one puts Baby in the corner,” as if dancing and a love story weren’t enough.

Now we’re talking. We’ve already watched Dirty Dancing, resulting in the ten year old lifting a bemused cat in the air, and all the children taking turns running across the room for their daddy to lift them up high. But I’m still putting it on the list. It’s got everything and more. No reason not to watch it again.

The Holiday (2006) – 85,000 searches

Another Christmas classic rom-com on this list. Finding love when and where you least expect it is probably not depicted as beautifully and magically as it is in The Holiday, in which Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet take a winter vacation to get away from their chaotic lives as much as possible. If you don’t fall at least a tiny bit in love with Jack Black (okay, technically I am VERY in love with him), then I don’t understand you. A Christmas rom-com list maker!

Moulin Rouge! (2001) – 83,000 searches

Moulin Rouge! received numerous awards to confirm its status as a classic and much praise for its groundbreaking creativity. This movie is worth watching again and again because of the energy of the cast, especially Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor’s performances as Satine and Christian.

Given her love of Titanic, a tragic love story could be just the ticket. Plus, as I said, musicals are very popular in this house! On this list.

Last Christmas (2019) – 80,000 searches.

The charming Emilia Clarke plays Kate, an elf who works in a London holiday shop all year. Until Kate meets the charismatic Tom, played by Henry Goulding, she lacks the drive to pursue her passion despite constantly being surrounded by holiday cheer. Enlivened by Wham! ‘s discography, this film is the ideal amalgamation of holiday cheer and love’s magic.

Love a bit of Wham!, and this is another love story that had be balling. A Christmas list addition.

Casablanca (1942) – 67,000 searches

The spark between Rick and Ilsa is rekindled when a cafe owner decides to assist his former lover and her husband in Casablanca. This true to life magnum opus featuring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman has almost 100% on Bad Tomatoes and a score of 100 on Metacritic, and it will most likely keep its high positioning on records like this one for a long time.

While it’s a classic, I think this one should be saved for when she’s older.

Conclusion

I have found SO MANY films to add to my list. She’s busy investigating monsters and mayhem to add to the list, but I’m pretty sure a few romantic movies slipped in will work wonderfully.

Do you have any favourites that didn’t make the list?

These Are The Most Photogenic Champions League Stadiums

On the JJ Barnes Blog, as the finals of the Champions League approaches, I decided to check out which are the most photogenic Champions League stadiums.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Liverpool

Since 2014, when I met Jonathan McKinney, I have been a fully signed up fan of LFC. Prior to 2014, I had little to no interest in anything sports related, so I’ll never claim to have Gold Star Fan status, however, I’m loving my fandom now. We watch together as a family, with the girls cheering the goals and morning the mistakes, and, in my case at least, regularly pledge my love and devotion of the beautiful Jürgen Klopp. My girls proudly wear their Liverpool onesies, I’ve stolen many of Jon’s football shirts, and even my mother is getting on board with the football supporting fun!

Unfortunately, Real Madrid defeated Liverpool in the Round of 16 of the Champions League. They lost the main leg 2-0 at Anfield, and they couldn’t topple the shortfall in the subsequent leg, drawing 1-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

It was a frustrating finish to Liverpool’s Champions League, but they are still in contention for both Premier League and FA Cup trophies, so we’ll just focus our energy on that now.

Photogenic Stadiums

However, as the football continues, despite our loss, it has me pondering less about which football team will win, and more about which stadium I’d most like to see in person.

To help me add to my travel-to-do list, Ticketgum.com shared which of the Champions League stadiums had the most photographs because the quarterfinals of 2022/23 Champions League. They are now able to determine which stadiums are the most popular to photograph by aggregating the total number of hashtags used on Instagram for each venue.

Barcelona’s Camp Nou

Because it has more than 2 million Instagram hashtags, Ticketgum.com can say that Barcelona’s Camp Nou is the most memorable Champions League stadium. Despite hosting in the group stages, Barcelona’s home stadium did not advance to the round of 16.

Liverpool’s Anfield

In second is Liverpool’s Anfield (Britain) with 1,643,400 hashtags, which facilitated the Frankfurt v Napoli game in the round of 16. We already know Anfield is a fantastic stadium, but it’s good to see it is being recognised by the fandom internationally!

Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu

Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu is likewise an area of interest among football fans as it comes to more than 700,000 Instagram hashtags. With a flow seating limit of 81,044, It is the second-biggest arena in Spain, holding the Quarter Last between host group Genuine Madrid and Chelsea on twelfth April.

A.C. and Inter Milan’s San Siro

With 1,421,344 Instagram hashtags, the San Siro Stadium of A.C. and Inter Milan comes in third. The San Siro is going to be transformed into a brand-new stadium that will be called “The Cathedral.” It will be located in a neighborhood next to the current arena that is dedicated to recreation and sports. The quarterfinal matchup between AC Milan and Napoli will take place on April 12 at the San Siro.

How Much Would Joe Goldberg’s London Life Really Cost?

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out new research which found how much Joe Goldberg’s London life would actually cost in the most recent season of You, and it turns out that even he can’t afford it.

You

I’m a huge fan of You. I love watching Joe Goldberg’s crimes, can’t help but root for him to get away with it, and find the beautiful people in beautiful places doing terrible things scenario to be captivating. I also love the city of London and have always dreamed of having the kind of budget that could make it my home.

Now, while I’m obviously miles away from ever being able to afford Joe’s lifestyle, I was curious what it would actually cost, so King Casino Bonus sent over details about the true cost of Joe’s London life.

Joe Goldberg’s London Life

The discoveries looked at London’s lease costs, charge rates, service bills, broadband arrangements and basic food item consumption to what an English Language lecturer could hope to make in the capital, to compute the expense of Joe Goldberg’s London life.

It turns out that Joe’s overspending by £312 per month just to cover the necessities is bad news for fans who want to follow in his footsteps and move to London.

Salary Vs Costs

When basic tax and average pension deductions are taken into account, the typical English Literature lecturer at a prestigious university like Darcy College can anticipate earning £45,923 per year, or £2,740 per month, according to local salaries.

However, his one-bedroom apartment in South Kensington’s Kynance Mews, one of London’s most expensive streets, would cost at least £2,240 per month to rent. This figure is based on what each house on the street would rent for if it were rented as a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment. However, Joe’s house has high ceilings, large windows, and a highly sought-after working fireplace, so he could expect to pay much more.

Joe, who goes by the alias Jonathan Moore at the moment, only has £500 left over from his monthly salary to live on; However, the unavoidable costs do not end there.

Joe, like nearly everyone else in the UK, will have to pay tax on his flat, and based on the area, he falls into Band G or H. Joe pays £161 per month in council tax after the 25% single person discount, which he wouldn’t get if he had Marianne.

Joe will still be responsible for paying his utility bills, which average £264 per month in London, and £44 per month for his WiFi, which he uses to stalk his new acquaintances. In addition, he will be responsible for paying £46 per month for his mobile plan and the typical £296 per person that London residents spend on groceries, including cups of tea.

Joe would be in debt by £3,744 at the end of the year, exceeding his monthly salary by at least £312 if he considered only the necessities.

Monthly Expenditure

ExpenditureMonthly Cost
Rent (Kynance Mews)£2,240
Council Tax (Band H)£161
Utility Bills (Electricity, Water, Gas)£264
Mobile Plan£46
WiFi Broadband£44
Groceries£296

Joe Can’t Afford His Life

His fundamental month to month use depends on the normal rates across the city, yet as he’s plumped for an especially rich area, it’s probably he’s considerably more under water. Joe can’t even afford a pint at the local pub, a new pair of shoes, or the tube to get to work, so it’s a good thing he made friends in high places when he first arrived in London.

Given that Joe is suspected of emptying his ex-wife Love’s secret bank account prior to escaping Madre Linda, fans may be surprised to learn that he is not financially stable. However, he was forced to return the funds to hitman Elliot prior to arriving in the United Kingdom.

Because he will have spent the majority of his budget pursuing Marianne in Paris before arriving in London empty-handed, it is highly unlikely that he has anything to his name other than the stolen bankroll.

Season 4 of You

King Casino Bonus stated in relation to the findings that viewers of You have been eagerly awaiting the release of Season 4, not least due to the show’s refreshing new setting. Fans took to Twitter after the season premiered to express their amusement at Joe’s apparent ability to survive in one of London’s most expensive areas on a lecturer’s salary, despite not having a PhD or any other significant qualifications.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that he would have a significant amount of debt. If he doesn’t start stealing from his victims in the second episode of the show or keep his wealthy friends, he’ll have a lot more to worry about than being caught for the murder of his ex-wife.

Conclusion

I’ve come to to conclusion that the only way I could afford Joe’s London Life is if I sell a few of my internal organs on the black market and make a pact with a jinn. Alas. I guess I’m sticking to rainy Staffordshire and trying to sell books like a regular writer, rather than a TV book nerd!

How To Prevent Children From Video Game Addiction

How To Prevent Children From Video Game Addiction

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out advice from experts at VPNOverview.com for how I can prevent my children from developing a video game addiction.

Growing up, like many of us, I loved video games. Many an idle hour would be spent playing Crash Bandicoot on the Playstation or Sims on my computer. My parents definitely worried that my brother and I were wasting too much time playing games and I always found it annoying. Games were just for fun and I needed to relax!

Now I’m the parent, I have a slightly different perspective. Having grown up with video games, I can see a massive benefit. When my children play a game on the Playstation together I think there is very little difference to when they play a boardgame together. It’s fun, they chat, they squabble, they play. It’s normal child culture and you’re only young once, gaming is great. However, gaming culture is very different now to when I was young. Gaming is much more immersive and all consuming, and the risk of losing the real world to the meta one is ever growing.

I want to protect my children the best I can, while still letting them blow off steam and play games. So, to guide me in how best I can achieve that, experts at cybersecurity expert Lauren Mak of VPNOverview.com sent me some information for how I can prevent my children from developing video game addiction.

Video Game Addiction

The world of online gaming is constantly growing and has become extremely popular among younger generations over the past decade. While children can benefit from socialization, observational and problem-solving skills, and online gaming, addiction can develop if time is not strictly controlled.

In the hope that parents and guardians will be able to allow their children to enjoy online gaming without suffering negative consequences, cybersecurity expert Lauren Mak of VPNOverview.com has compiled some of the best advice on how to identify gaming addictions in children and how to prevent them.

Warning signs of gaming addiction:

• A lack of interest in things they used to be interested in and a desire to only engage in gaming activities—this can prevent a child from pursuing other hobbies in which they might excel and even pursue a career.

• Withdrawal symptoms include irritability, hostility, mood swings, impatience, depression, anxiety, and anger when not gaming, even for short periods.

• A lack of concern for personal care: Inability to take care of one’s personal hygiene and insomnia can have a negative impact on a child’s ability to cope with day-to-day activities and even lead to eating disorders.

• Lack of compassion which can make it difficult for the child to form healthy social connections with others and can result in serious mental health issues.

Reasons for video game addiction

It’s easy to try to find one reason why kids and teens become addicted to video games, but there may be more than one. Gaming may be introduced to children at an early age; For instance, playing games like Minecraft and Animal Crossing can introduce kids to gaming. As the youngster ages and further developed, they look for additional difficult, connecting with games to move onto.

The stories and graphics of video games can also entice children to use them as a means of escape from real life. In addition, children with attention deficit disorders or high levels of anxiety may be more likely to develop an addiction to video games.

How to prevent and treat video game addiction in children and adolescents:

1. First, talk to your child and try to figure out every problem and symptom they might be having. Spend some time figuring out their symptoms and saying you want to make a plan for helping them overcome.

2. Practice what you preach and encourage moderation in screen time and screen use. Assuming you are attempting to urge your kid to invest less energy on the web, guarantee you do likewise; This will demonstrate to them that offline time can be just as exciting as online time.

3. Keep an eye on how your child behaves when he or she is not playing video games and offer support as needed. Doing activity or something animating to the cerebrum will have their psyche off gaming in a matter of moments

4. Parental controls are always an option; although it sounds intrusive. You can allow your child to spend time online, but only for limited periods, if you keep an eye on how they play games. Be honest with the child and let them know that they still have the right to privacy, but that doing so will ultimately be to their advantage.

5. Positivity in gaming: Although it may seem counterintuitive, expressing an interest in gaming could encourage healthier choices and make people more sympathetic to your wishes.

Online Gaming

A VPNOverview.com expert explained that, despite the fact that online gaming can be a great way for children and teenagers to improve their cognitive skills, social awareness, and creativity, there is a possibility that the child will develop an addiction as a result of playing too much online.

Keep in mind that while you want your adolescent or young adult to have fun and explore online gaming, you also want them to be safe and develop healthy online habits without invading their privacy.

If you think your child is at risk for a gaming addiction, you are not alone. There are always safe and healthy ways to prevent, detect, and stop it. Because of this, these are excellent examples of what to look for in a child who enjoys online gaming and how to get started breaking an addiction that could be taking over your lives.
