I love my hair, it’s long and thick and grows quickly, but I’m also very lazy with my beauty regime and do the absolute minimum possible. Because of this, I’m probably not getting the best results for my hair, and I’m curious about how much better I’d look if I did actually make the effort. When I saw the TikTok trend of washing hair with rice water and getting fantastic results, I wondered if this was something I could easily incorporate into my routine.

To help me out, the beauty experts at Fresha sent over their research into why it works and how to do it myself.

Online interest in rice water has skyrocketed worldwide, and searches for results on Pinterest and TikTok have dramatically increased over the past six months.

Over the past 5 years, searches for ‘how to make rice water’ have increased 148% worldwide, with its highest search volume skyrocketing during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. While salons were shut and people were forced to care for their hair at home, platforms like TikTok gave hairstylists and professionals a chance to guide their followers in ways to keep their hair healthy. Since the pandemic, the popularity of using rice water to improve hair health has been on the rise thanks to influencers and TikTokkers sharing their results from implementing rice water in their haircare routines.

Results have found that using rice water in your hair will rejuvenate of dull and dry strands, help to reduce and eliminate dandruff, and make your hair look and feel thicker, shinier and fuller. Because rice water is great for all hair types , it can even give naturally curly hair more bounce and volume!

Rice water contains a plethora of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins B1, B6 and magnesium, as well as zinc, potassium and other fibrous elements that work wonders when used on the hair regularly.

How To Make Rice Water

  • Take ½ a cup of uncooked rice (rinse well)
  • Pour into jug/bowl of 3 cups of water
  • Soak for up to 24 hours
  • Once soaked for the desired time, strain out the rice and pour it into a spray bottle for easy use on hair
  • Apply rice water to your hair for between 15-20 minutes, then wash it out. Repeat once a week.

The proven benefits of rice water are well and truly taking over the internet, and with the product being so easy to make, at a fraction of the price of some high-end products, there is no wonder why people are hopping on the trend and trying it themselves, in the comfort of their own homes.

Although the trend gained most of its immediate interest during the pandemic, the increase in searches on platforms such as Pinterest proves its popularity. The fact that you can make something so healthy for your hair at a very low cost and see results in a matter of time is something that you can’t say no to.

I’m not keen on spending loads of time or money on my looks, preferring to keep things as simple and cost effective as possible. However, I also feel better about myself when I think I’m looking quite pretty, so I’m a big fan of finding loop holes that let me get salon like treatment without spending salon like money.

The idea of rice water for my hair feels like something I can do! I’d love thicker, glossier hair, and soaking rice in water is something I think even I can muster up.

Have you any experience of this trend? Did you find it worked well?
