On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out the mermaidcore fashion trends, inspired by Lizzo’s mermaid manicure, Dua Lipa in the Barbie movie, and OF COURSE, Halle Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

Mermaid Fashion

Mermaid inspired fashion is here for Summer of 2023, and I am here for it! Lizzo recently caused a stir with a beautiful mermaidcore manicure featuring green and silver crystals, Dua Lipa is looking fabulous as a blue haired mermaid in the Barbie movie, and Halle Bailey is stunning as Ariel in the new live action The Little Mermaid. However, mermaids have featured a lot in my own work too!

Mermaids in my life

In Hollowhood, (written and directed by me and my ex partner Jonathan McKinney, my character Bethany Palmer wears a mermaid necklace, that she then lends to Penny. When Penny wears it, it is noticed by her ex-girlfriend Olivia during a tender scene as they estranged couple reconnect after a night of drinking and dancing… before things start to get super spooky. Penny is even wearing it in the poster for the film! Hollowhood is streaming now on Plex and Tubi, and hopefully coming to more platforms soon so do check it out.

My second book, Lilly Prospero And The Mermaids Curse, (obviously) features mermaids heavily throughout. The mermaids are being hunted by a Harvester, who pulls them from the ocean to sell their body parts on the magical black market, keeping them alive for as long as possible as he chops them up slowly (grim). My heroic teenage team, Lilly and Saffron, want to find and stop the man responsible, but things get complicated and soon it’s not just the mermaids who are being hunted, but Lilly and Saffron themselves.

This love of mermaids has been present throughout my life, and so this new mermaid fashion trend is very exciting for me! So, I decided to share some of my ideas for how we can enjoy and embrace this fantastic fashion trend!

Mermaidcore Fashion Trends

Mermaid Manicures

A mermaid manicure typically features shades of blue, green, and pink, and often includes seashells, fish scales, and other aquatic motifs. Mermaid manicures can be done with gel polish, regular polish, or acrylics. While you can get them done professionally at a salon to achieve a Lizzo standard, you can also have a play at home!

I completely LOVE this gorgeous nail varnish. Mermaid Hair

In the upcoming Barbie movie, we’re all super excited to see Dua Lipa’s blue haired mermaid Barbie, and pinterest is full of gorgeous mermaid hair trends. When you get your hair done professionally, a mermaid hair style will feature loads of beautiful blues and purples, layred through you hair, and it looks AMAZING.

However, these are some tips for styling your hair in mermaid style at home:

1. Start by washing your hair and conditioning it.
2. Apply a leave-in conditioner to help protect your hair from heat damage.
3. Use a curling iron or straightener to create waves or curls in your hair.
4. Once your hair is styled, divide it into two sections.
5. Secure one section of hair with a hair clip.
6. Braid the other section of hair.
7. Once the braid is complete, secure it with a hair elastic.
8. Repeat steps 5-7 with the other section of hair.
9. Once both sections of hair are braided, twist them together and secure them with a hair elastic.

11. Add some seashells, fish scales, or other aquatic motifs to your hairstyle for a more mermaid-like look.

Mermaid Make Up

How to do mermaid makeup:

1. 1. Start by applying a primer to your eyelids. This will help to create a smooth base for your eyeshadow and prevent it from creasing.

   3. Apply a darker blue or green eyeshadow to the crease of your eyelids. This will help to create depth and dimension to your look.

Mermaid inspired fashion is a lot of fun, whether it’s wild and bright scales and glitter, or a more subtle mermaid dress, you can really have fun channeling your mermaid style. Aim for greens and blues, with shimmering fabrics and cute aquatic accessories!
