If you’re a parent like me, you’ll know that the bathroom is more than just a functional space; it’s a sanctuary where you can escape the demands of your busy life and find moments of serenity. For one thing, there’s a lock. If you’re able to ignore the knocking and shouts of “what are you doing, mummy?”, turn on some music and light some candles, maybe open a bottle of wine, the bathroom is a mini retreat perfect for finally getting a chance to relax.

Because I definitely want a space to relax in, I decided to check out what you need to create the perfect relaxing bathroom space where I can unwind, rejuvenate, and recharge my batteries.

Perfect Relaxing Bathroom Space

Spa-Like Decoration

Transforming the bathroom into a spa-like oasis is key, so choose decor that inspires that feeling in you.

If you prefer colours on the walls, use soft blues, greens, and lavenders to create a relaxing and serene atmosphere. If you prefer a more natural and earthy vibe to relax in, neutral colors like beige, cream, or light grey will look classy and feel calming. Bright colours or busy patterns are over stimulating.

Bring the outdoors in by using natural materials like wood, stone, and add plants to purify the air and create a more natural atmosphere that encourages a feeling of relaxation. Make sure to choose plants that are easy to care for and that thrive in low-light conditions, because dead plants are the opposite of relaxing, they’re just a reminder of chores ahead!

Luxurious Soaking Tub

A deep, luxurious bathtub where can submerge yourself, surrounded by aromatherapy candles or bath salts   serves as the centerpiece of a relaxing bathroom. Taking a bath in a relaxing environment can help to improve your mood and reduce stress levels, soothe sore muscles and joints, and the warm water can help to improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of heart disease.

If you’ve got plenty of space in your bathroom, a freestanding bath is typically larger than a built-in bath, and gives you more room to relax and stretch out. For a clean and uncluttered look, opt for the enduring elegance of a Nordic design. The timeless sophistication is stylish and calming, and the clean lines and uncluttered space create a sense of peace and tranquility, perfect for relaxing.

For smaller bathrooms, like mine, a shower tub combines several functions, serving as a shower, bathtub, seating and storage area in one.

A tub and shower combo with a closable tub door not only works in smaller bathrooms, but they is also ideal for people with restricted mobility so you can still get the pleasure of soaking in the hot water.

Whether you want the efficiency of a shower or the opportunity to soak in hot water, this is a great option to make the most of your space and give you options depending on what you need.

Ambient Lighting

Creating a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere in your bathroom  by getting rid of harsh shadows and stark contrasts with ambient lighting. Bright lights can be startling and over stimulating, so use gentle lighting to sooth your senses and calm your mind by filling the room with a soft, diffused glow.

If you’ve chosen a nature inspired design of bathrooms, the lighting should mimic the soothing qualities of natural light, replicating the softness of natural daylight filtering through a window. Whether you’re starting your day with a calming routine or winding down in the evening, the gentle, diffused sets the perfect tone for relaxation.

Comfortable Seating

If you’ve got space in your bathroom, including a cozy seating area gives you a space to sit, read, meditate, or simply unwind. A plush chair or a cushioned bench can transform the bathroom from just somewhere you wash into somewhere you go to fully relax.

If you have a small bathroom, you may be able to fit a small, compact seating area, such as a stool or a bench. If you have a larger bathroom, you may be able to fit a larger seating area, such as a chair or a sofa.

Smart Storage Solutions

When your bathroom is cluttered, it can be difficult to find what you need, such as your toothbrush, shampoo, or soap which is frustrating and time-consuming, and looks unsightly and unappealing so you can’t relax or feel comfortable.

Bathroom Shelves

Smart storage solutions can play a pivotal role in transforming your bathroom into a haven of tranquility by not only keeping the space organized but also making the room look and feel nicer. Floating cabinets create a sense of spaciousness by keeping the floor area open and providing concealed storage for toiletries, towels, and other essentials to add a touch of modern elegance while ensuring your relaxation space remains uncluttered.

Open shelving units on empty walls not only offer storage but can be decorative and pretty. If you incorporate woven baskets or aesthetically pleasing containers to store towels, candles, and bath products, the combination of storage and style adds a personalized touch to your bathroom retreat.

Aromatherapy and Scents

Scent plays a powerful role in relaxation. Infuse the bathroom with calming scents through essential oil diffusers, scented candles, or bath products that incorporate soothing fragrances like lavender or chamomile.

Choosing the right essential oils is crucial. For relaxing, lavender is known for its calming properties, perfect for unwinding after a long day.

For a quick and easy aromatherapy fix, create your own shower spray by diluting the essential oil with water in a spray bottle. Mist the shower walls before stepping in so the steam to carries the scent throughout your shower.

By adding aromatherapy-infused bath bombs or bath salts to your tub, they release their aromatic compounds as they dissolve in the hot water, creating an immersive and soothing environment that envelops your senses.

Soundscapes and Music

Music has an uncanny ability to touch our emotions and alter our mood. When you play relaxing music in your bathroom, you’re inviting a cascade of healing notes that gently wash away stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Add a waterproof Bluetooth speaker to your bathroom so you can listen to your favorite tunes or guided meditations while enjoying a soothing bath.

Soft piano melodies, ambient sounds of nature, or serene classical compositions can fill the space with tranquility, so you can unwind and escape the pressures of the outside world. By focusing on the music, you redirect your thoughts away from daily pressures for a sense of calm mental clarity.

Privacy and Uninterrupted Time

Perhaps the most important feature is privacy and uninterrupted time. While it might be an illusive concept, especially if your children a little, if you create a haven to retreat without disturbances and fully immerse yourself in the opportunity to relax, you’ll benefit in the long run. It’s stressful being a parent, and while you love your kids desperately, you’ll be a better parent if you’ve had a chance to unwind with self care.
