I love wearing perfume, and my favourite scents involve lavendar, citrus or vanilla. But I also hate spending money on expensive perfumes just to have them fade away before I’ve even made it half way through the day!

To help me learn how to get the most out of my favourite perfumes, experts at Parfumery sent over their top tips on how to get the most out of your fragrances, even during the peak of summer, allowing you to smell gorgeous all day.

Why Wear Perfume?

  • Perfume can make you feel confident. When you smell good, you feel good. This is because the sense of smell is closely linked to our emotions. When we smell something that we like, it releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that makes us feel happy and confident.
  • Perfume can make you feel more attractive. Studies have shown that people are more likely to be attracted to others who smell good. This is because our sense of smell is also closely linked to our memories. When we smell something that we associate with positive memories, it can make us feel more attracted to the person who is wearing it.
  • Perfume can be a way to express yourself. There are so many different perfumes available, each with its own unique scent. This means that you can find a perfume that perfectly reflects your personality. Whether you want to smell like a flowery meadow or a musky forest, there’s a perfume out there for you.
  • Perfume can be a way to connect with others. When you wear a perfume that someone else also likes, it can create a sense of connection between you. This is because our sense of smell is closely linked to our memories. When we smell something that we associate with someone else, it can bring back memories of that person.
  • Perfume can simply be a pleasure. There’s something about the smell of a good perfume that can just make you feel happy. It can be a way to relax and unwind after a long day, or to add a touch of luxury to your everyday life.

How To Make Your Perfume Scent Last Longer

Put your perfumes in the fridge

Be careful where you store perfumes because many things can change how they smell, including how humid the area is and whether they are in direct sunlight. Keeping your perfume in the fridge is an easy method for keeping your scents at a cool temperature, which helps maintain its aroma. A cooler temperature can also enhance any fresher notes that might be in your scent, like lemon, mint, and bergamot.

If keeping perfume in the fridge isn’t possible, try to store your perfumes in a cool and dry space, like a draw or cabinet in a cooler room.

Top Tip – Although perfume bottles look pretty on display, you may be damaging the surfaces they are sitting on if there are any spills or the bottles are damaged. Examine your perfume bottles to see if there are any signs of leaks, and it may be worth decanting them into new containers.

Apply petroleum jelly first

Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to your skin before applying the fragrance to help your perfume last longer. The jelly will hold in the aroma and help it last the entire day.

Spray scents in your hair

Pair your everyday scents with specific hair mists and scents. Your hair is known to hold fragrance very well, which is the reason so many beautiful scented hair products are available. To apply hair fragrance or mists, it is flip your head over and spritz an in an even coating of the hair fragrance, and leave for several seconds to let it to dry.

Top Tip – Try spraying your perfume on your hairbrush before running it through dry hair. Try not to directly apply scent to your hair, as the alcohol in the perfume can harm the hair.

Spray more than one area

By focusing only on the neck and wrists, you miss out on many other areas where your fragrances may last longer throughout the day. Try spraying other parts of your body, like your belly button, back of your knees, and elbows, which tend to get less sun and sweat less.

The hot weather can make your perfume scent disappear more quickly than when applied on cooler days, so try applying it to various areas of the skin that are not exposed to daylight.

Layer it up

When you go about your daily skincare routine, there are many ways to get the most out of your scent. Try using fragranced shower gels and body creams to start layering, then, apply your fragrance and other body mists to finish off your fragrance for the day. If your deodorant is a specific scent, you can layer that by starting with a roll on and finishing with a spray.

Top Tip: If you’re going to a special event, like a wedding or prom, make sure you have a small perfume or spray in your bag so you can keep up with your scent throughout the night.

Match your body moisturizer to your scent

Lotions, hand creams, and shower gels with the same scent are often sold alongside many fragrances on the market; These are an excellent way to keep the aroma going throughout the day.

If you put on the perfume first thing in the morning, why not keep a hand cream or lotion with the same scent in your bag so you can use it throughout the day? This will save money as you won’t have to keep re-applying the original perfume and you can buy the creams and additional items for less money than the original fragrance.

Conclusion

My favourite tips here are applying perfume onto petroleum jelly, easy cheap and cheerful, and using hair mists. I have so much hair that it always pleases me when it smells nice.
